Things to Do in Počitelj – Medieval Village in Bosnia & Herzegovina (2026)!

One of my favourite places I visited in Bosnia & Herzegovina is Počitelj.

It’s an enchanting village beside the Neretva River that was originally built in the medieval era and has an Ottoman influence.

Although it’s small and compact, there are many enchanting attractions here that make it worth visiting. As a history lover, I was in my element.

Here are all the magical things to do in Počitelj, Bosnia & Herzegovina!

Why visit Počitelj?

Počitelj is one of those places that makes you feel like you’ve been transported back in time to a bygone era.

Its labyrinthine cobbled streets, fortress walls and tall towers make it look like something that’s been plucked from the pages of a fairytale.

You can wander around the old fortress, enter a grand mosque, see the ancient clock tower and Ottoman hammam. 

The postcard-worthy views you can get from the Osmanski Tower and Pilavdžić Bastion are also breathtaking over the Neretva River.

It really is the prettiest village in Bosnia & Herzegovina, and I would return in a heartbeat.

The history of Počitelj

Počitelj was founded by King Tvrtko I in 1383 as a strategic defence on the Neretva River.

He created a large fortress to combat enemies and protect trade routes heading to the Adriatic Coast. 

In 1471, it was attacked and fell to the Ottoman Empire, which called it “The Key of Herzegovina”.

The Ottomans then expanded the fortress, building the Šišman Ibrahim-Paša Mosque, a madrasa (school), hammam (bathhouse) and clock tower.

It then lost its strategic position when it was taken over by the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1878 and later fell into decline.

It became a popular artist colony in 1964 with Gavrankapetan House at its heart. Tragically, it suffered major damage during the Bosnian War.

Today, it’s a protected National Monument that is still home to some 80 residents. It’s also a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s one of the finest preserved medieval settlements in the country, and you must visit on your travels through the Balkans.   

How to get to Počitelj in Bosnia & Herzegovina

Počitelj is located around 30 kilometres away from Mostar and is easy enough to drive there in around 40-45 minutes on the M17 Road.

It’s close to popular sights like Blagaj Tekija and Kravica Waterfalls that make for a wonderful road trip.

Unfortunately, public transport is very limited in this area, and so it’s not possible to arrive here by local bus from Mostar.

If you’re not driving in the Balkans, I recommend taking a guided tour of southern Bosnia where you can see many popular sights in one day.

If you would rather not drive or plan your own transport, there are many day trips that you can book from Mostar that include a stop at Počitelj.

I booked a day trip to Kravica Waterfalls, which included the Fortica Skywalk, Blagaj, and Počitelj.

It was an incredible day trip and, along the way, we got to learn the tragic history of this beautiful country through the events of the Bosnian War. 

Things to do in Počitelj

Although it’s a tiny place, this mighty medieval village has a surprising amount of gorgeous attractions.

Here are all the best things to do in Počitelj during a visit.

1. Počitelj Fortress (Kula)

The entire village of Počitelj is technically a fortress or kula. It started construction in medieval times but mostly has an Ottoman influence.

You can tell by the maze of cobblestone streets that snake through the citadel and connect stone houses with ramshackle roofing.

The higher you climb in this medieval village, the more incredible views you will be rewarded with.

You’ll find gorgeous views of the Neretva River, pomegranate trees, towers and spires. Everywhere you look, something is enchanting. 

Just make sure to have a good pair of shoes on as the floor is very uneven and steep. Also, try to avoid the harsh midday sun as it’s exposed.

2. Osmański Fort Paszy (Watch Tower)

Osmański Fort Paszy is the iconic large tower you can see all over Počitelj Fort, and it’s worth climbing the hill to take a closer look.

It used to be the old Ottoman watch tower where they would look out for encroaching enemies. 

Today, it’s abandoned, but you can climb to the very top to get panoramic views over the Neretva Valley for free!

I attempted to do this, but the stairs are mostly dilapidated with no railings. It looked quite dangerous to me, so I gave up.

But if you’re feeling stronger and braver, go for it. Just be very careful as you climb.

3. Šišman Ibrahim Pasha Mosque

Počitelj mosque is called Šišman Ibrahim Pasha Mosque and was built in 1563 by Hadži Alija. 

You can see its single dome and minaret tower all over the village, and it’s well worth visiting.

It was largely destroyed in the Bosnian War but was faithfully reconstructed. You can find impressive stonework and stained glass inside.

There is an entry fee of 2 BAM (it’s free for muslims to pray). I thought this was a small price to pay to visit such a wonderful place.

As it’s a religious building, you should dress respectfully with your shoulders and knees covered. Women should cover their heads with a scarf. 

4. Sahat-Kula (Clock Tower)

Počitelj Clock Tower is the large prism column you can see at the bottom of the village. 

It was built in the 17th century out of stone and was constructed by the Ottomans.

Although it doesn’t tell time today, you can see where the clock face used to be. It acted as both a timekeeper and a watch tower back in the day.

It’s something you can see from all over the fortress, and it was purposefully designed this way. 

5. Hammam (Bathhouse)

The Ottomans certainly left their mark on Počitelj, and you can see their abandoned buildings all over the village.

The most interesting has to be the old stone Hammam or public bathhouse built in the 17th century.

Although you cannot go inside, it’s fascinating to see the Ottoman architecture.  

6. Gavrankapetan House 

Just behind Počitelj, you’ll find the ancient Gavrankapetan House up a set of cobbled stairs. It was built during the 16th century.  

This used to be home to the Počitelj Art Colony in Bosnia. Unfortunately, it suffered fire damage in the Bosnian War and had to be largely restored. 

Today, it’s the finest preserved example of Ottoman residential architecture; you can see how wealthy people lived back then.

They often run summer events and workshops for painters and sculptors.

7. Pilavdžić Bastion (observation deck)

One of my favourite things to do in Počitelj was climb up to the Pilavdžić Bastion at the very top of the village.

Here, you can find an observation deck with postcard-worthy views over the entire medieval village and Neretva Valley.

It’s completely free to visit, so make sure to have your camera at the ready. You won’t want to miss capturing this stunning panorama.

8. Quaint streets & fresh fruit

One of my favourite things to do in Počitelj was simply getting lost in the labyrinth of quaint cobblestone streets.

You could wander for hours to see old houses, fortress towers and panoramic views. There were also many cute cats around.

Why not pop some coins in the honesty boxes to sample local fruit? You can see pomegranate trees all over the village, so you know it’s fresh. 

The local grandmothers sell squeezed juice at the village entrance, and it’s so tasty.

Is Počitelj worth visiting?

Yes, I thought that Počitelj was worth visiting as it’s easily the prettiest village in Bosnia & Herzegovina. 

The fortress walls, tall towers and cobblestone streets, along with the rolling emerald hills over the river, were like a scene of a storybook. 

As someone who loves history and whimsical places, it was a dream come true.

If you’re travelling around the Balkans, the charming village of Počitelj has to be on your bucket list!

How long do you need to explore Počitelj?

I would say you need around 1-2 hours to enjoy all the attractions in Počitelj comfortably.

It’s a very small village, but there are quite a few attractions that are worth your time.

It’s also very easy to get lost in the cobbled maze of streets in the citadel, and there were so many cute cats to distract you. It’s a great adventure.

I recommend combining Počitelj with other amazing attractions in Bosnia such as Blagaj and Kravica Waterfalls for a road trip to remember!

Opening hours & entry fees

Although Počitelj is a popular tourist attraction in Bosnia & Herzegovina, it’s still a residential village.

So, it’s open 24 hours to visit the streets and fortress. But attractions like the mosque have dedicated opening hours.

It’s also completely free to visit. However, I would have some cash with you to pay for entrance fees, fresh fruit juice and honesty boxes.

Important visitor tips

• The cobbled streets are very steep and uneven with many stairs. Make sure you’re wearing a pair of sensible shoes like trainers.

• I would not recommend climbing up Osmanski Tower as the building is mostly dilapidated. It looked so dangerous. 

• It’s worth bringing a scarf with you to cover your head inside the Počitelj mosque.

• Have some cash and coins with you for entry fees, souvenirs and fresh fruit.

Where to stay in Počitelj

Most visitors only spend a few hours in Počitelj as part of a day trip. But you could also opt to stay overnight.

There is the Riverside Guesthouse just a few kilometres away from the village in the valley.

I chose to stay in Mostar as a base and chose the wonderful Kriva Cuprija next to the Crooked Bridge.

It’s a historic property and provided an unforgettable stay. I still dream about their breakfast spread in the morning.

Things to do near Počitelj

After your visit to Počitelj, there are plenty of amazing things to do nearby.

If you haven’t, you must add Mostar to your Bosnian itinerary. It’s another medieval city with Ottoman influence and looks like a fairytale.

You can wander the markets on the cobbled streets, catch bridge jumpers from the Old Bridge or sip a Bosnian coffee.

Another place worth visiting close to Pocitelj is Blagaj Tekija, an incredible attraction with a monastery built into the cliffside.

You can take photos from the viewpoint, visit the Dervish House or sample local cuisine whilst watching the waterfalls. 

Lastly, why not travel to Kravica Waterfalls? It’s a stunning place to spend a day. You can swim in a gorgeous lagoon with roaring cascades!
