Rastoke in Croatia – Visit a Secret Fairytale Waterfall Village (2026)!

One of the prettiest villages in Croatia has to be Rastoke, home to a series of enchanting waterfalls.

It transports you back in time and looks like it’s been plucked from the pages of a fairytale. 

Although it’s close to Plitvice Lakes, this sleepy settlement sees a fraction of the crowds and is an enchanting paradise. 

This was easily one of my favourite experiences on my trip around the Balkans, and I would return in a heartbeat.

Here is a complete guide on visiting Rastoke, the secret waterfall village of Croatia.

Introducing Rastoke in Croatia

Rastoke is a hidden gem in Croatia that looks like something from a storybook.

Imagine a hodgepodge of adorable houses, mills and streets from a bygone era.

There are many local legends of fairies, water spirits and magical creatures that add to its charm.

The reason why it’s so special is that this village is home to many magical waterfalls.

It sits on a meeting place between the Korana and Slunjčica Rivers, and so there are over 23 cascades throughout.

It’s a gem that has inspired travellers, writers and artists for centuries.

The history of Rastoke 

Rastoke has a geographical phenomenon called tufa formation, which means that this area has been constantly evolving for centuries.

But, its unique position at the meeting point of two rivers also means that it has a natural source of water power. 

Settlers built the first watermills in Rastoke in the 17th century, and the village expanded from there.

At its peak, there were over 20 mills in the village that would grind corn and wheat. It was an important trade export which made it wealthy.

Although the need for watermills has dwindled with industrialisation, Rastoke still retains its historic charm.

The ancestors of the original residents chose to remain here, and many of the buildings have not been touched since they were first built.

It looks trapped in time and almost like a living museum hidden away from the modern world.

A secret fairytale village 

Today, Rastoke is known as a secret village in Croatia. 

It’s called “Little Plitvice” as both places share the Korana River, but the great thing is that this sleepy place sees a fraction of the crowds. 

This ended up being one of my favourite places to visit in Croatia for that reason, as there was hardly anyone around. 

You could simply enjoy the magic of this wonderful waterfall village in peace. 

How to visit Rastoke in Croatia

Rastoke is a tiny settlement near the town of Slunj in Croatia and is approximately:

• From Zagreb: 100 kilometres or a 90-minute drive 
• Plitvice Lakes: 25 kilometres or a 30-40 minute drive
• From Split: 288 kilometres or a 3-hour drive

As it’s quite a remote location in the countryside, the easiest way to visit would be to drive.

Most visitors make a pitstop here, along with Plitvice Lakes, on their way to Split.

There is plenty of parking found just above the village overlooking the waterfalls.

Can you visit Rastoke without a car?

Yes, you can travel most of the way to Rastoke without a car, and then it’s a short walk to the village. 

There are regular bus services from Zagreb heading to Plitvice Lakes that make a stop in Slunj. The most popular choice is FlixBus.

From Slunj Central Bus Station, you can easily walk around 1 kilometre or 10 minutes to Rastoke Waterfall Village. 

Make sure to book your return journey in advance in busy seasons like summer. 

Although Rastoke is a hidden gem, Plitvice Lakes is far from it, and buses can be packed.

There are many organised tours from Zagreb that head to Plitvice Lakes and make a short stop at Rastoke Waterfalls along the way.

Things to do in Rastoke

Rastoke is a small village in Croatia, and visiting isn’t about ticking off a big list of attractions.

I came here without a plan and was happy to explore without a map.

You can wander through the winding lanes, cross bridges to small islands and encounter lush meadows. It was the perfect place to get lost.

However, it’s always nice to know what to expect, and I wouldn’t want you to miss anything.

So, here are all the things to do in Rastoke Waterfall Village.

1. Admire Rastoke waterfalls

There are 23 Rastoke waterfalls that you can find in the village, and they vary in size and strength.

The most famous ones are Slap Hrvoje, Slap Buk and Slap Vilina Kosa or Fairy’s Hair!

You can follow the path from the upper car parks down to the village to see most of them for free.

Then, you can walk around the village to find more. There are also some great lookouts of the cascades in the Fairy Garden for a small fee.

2. The Old Mill & Bridge

There are many historic mills in Rastoke, but the one that caught my eye was the one by the Old French Bridge.

This historic crossing has a gorgeous cluster of houses beside it, which look like something from a fairytale.

You can cross over this bridge to enter the village proper and admire stunning views of the river and cascades on the way.

3. Stroll the Korana River Bank

One of the best places to capture these storybook views is over the Korana River.

There is a path you can follow along the bank that provides wonderful scenery. 

They have even set up a bench at the viewpoint where you can get some photos to remember your visit.

4. Have a drink in Vodena Ovca Bar

If you fancy a drink on your trip to Rastoke, I recommend Vodena Ovca Bar.

The outdoor terrace has seats directly over one of the Rastoke waterfalls, how magical.

You can enjoy a refreshing drink in the sunshine with the sounds of nature.

If the weather is cold, they also have indoor seating with a crackling fireplace.

The owner is especially lovely, and I enjoyed warming up with a coffee on a frosty morning. 

5. Visit Rastoke Fairy Garden

Beyond the waterfalls, the Rastoke Fairy Garden is the main attraction in the village. It’s perfect for children and big kids alike.

It’s called Slovin Unique – Rastoke, and it’s a whimsical trail with 14 points of interest for sightseeing.

You’ll wander through an Old Mill, museum exhibitions, and sculptures. There are also unique lookouts for the main Rastoke waterfalls.

I particularly loved following the mossy cavern down to the riverbank and exploring the caves. 

But my favourite part was exploring the fairy garden at the end. You can find them everywhere, and it was so adorable. 

There are also plenty of photo opportunities, like frames, swings and wooden bridges that make it worth the entry fee. 

The whole trail will take you around an hour, but you could spend more if you’re having too much fun. 

Tickets are €7 for an adult most of the year, but go up to €9 during June – September. Summer fees are common throughout Croatia.

6. Have Pizza in Bistro Kum 

If you’re looking for a place to eat in Rastoke, then look no further than Bistro Kum.

This cosy restaurant in a historic building can be found in the heart of the village.

You’ll find freshly made lasagna, toasted sandwiches and open-flame pizzas on the menu. 

As it was so cold on my visit and I had a long bus journey, I relished the warmth inside and wolfed my pizza. It was absolutely delicious.

If you don’t have time for a meal, they also serve drinks, or you can order takeaway. 

Just check opening times before you go, as restaurants in this area close early. You can also try Restoran Ambar and Restoran Petro.

7. Admire the fairytale houses

Rastoke is one of those places that’s lovely to explore without a map or directions. 

You can take a stroll through these storybook streets and enjoy getting lost in the labyrinth of cottages, waterfalls and mills. 

It really feels like you’ve stepped back in time to a bygone era with something enchanting to find around every corner. 

Many of the buildings have signs outside with their history and local legends, which were fascinating.

On my stroll, I encountered some market stalls selling Rastoke souvenirs.

I particularly loved the pottery. They had all sorts of adorable and locally handmade mugs and magnets for my ever-growing collection.

8. Visit Slunj Fortress

Although not in the village proper, if you have the time, I recommend visiting Slunj Castle (Stari Grad Slunj).

It’s an old fortification built by the Frankopans in the war against the Ottomans and dates back to the 12th century.

It’s mostly a ruin today, but it’s an adventure through history, and the views you can get from here are breathtaking. 

Is Rastoke worth visiting?

Yes, Rastoke Village was easily a highlight of my adventures through Croatia.

It’s a hidden gem that looks like it’s been plucked from the pages of a fairytale.

It’s a small and sleepy place, but its magic makes a big impression and will leave you feeling enchanted. 

You can easily make a trip here along with Plitvice Lakes, as they are so close together.

Make sure to add this whimsical waterfall village to your Croatian itinerary. 

How long do you need to visit Rastoke?

Rastoke is tiny, and so you could see everything in just a single morning or afternoon. 

It’s a gorgeous place to spend a few hours, as it’s incredibly peaceful.

If you prefer to take things slowly, you could spend a relaxing day or two with some other attractions in Slunj. 

There are lots of walks in nature and things to see around the river and beyond.

My top tips

• Plan your journey if you’re visiting without a car. Buses do stop here, but services are limited and infrequent. 

• There is no Uber in Rastoke; if you want to book a taxi, you need to call the local services. 

• Cash is still very much king here. So, make sure you have some handy for stalls and cafés. 

• It’s colder here than in Zagreb and on the coast. So remember to pack layers. Also, you’ll want sensible shoes for the trails.

Where to stay in Rastoke

Most people visit Rastoke on the way to Plitvice Lakes and Split, or vice versa. But I highly recommend staying the night if you have time.

It’s a beautiful retreat in nature, but options are limited. Remember to book well in advance during busy seasons like summer.
