Everyone has heard of the famous Bukchon Hanok Village when they visit Seoul, but have you heard of Eunpyeong Hanok Village (은평한옥마을)?

It’s a hidden gem where the traditional-style buildings are just as charming, but the streets see a fraction of the crowds.

It’s an enchanting place on the fringes of Bukhansan National Park that acts as a portal that transports you back in time.

This was easily a highlight of my travels around South Korea, especially with the panoramic 1in1jan café.

Here is a complete guide to Seoul’s hidden gem, Eunpyeong Hanok Village.

What is Eunpyeong Hanok Village?

Eunpyeong Hanok Village is a relatively new purpose-built traditional village near Seoul in South Korea.

It has over 160 hanoks in the settlement, constructed to encourage tourism to the Eunpyeong-gu area.

As it’s built on the edge of Bukhansan National Park, you can spot granite peaks like Bibong, Jokduribong and Bongsan in the distance.

Together, the scene looks like it’s been plucked from the pages of a fairytale. It’s no wonder so many K-Dramas have been filmed here.

You must visit this hidden gem without the crowds. Fortunately, this cultural paradise is a very easy day trip from Seoul.

How to get to Eunpyeong Hanok Village from Seoul

Eunpyeong Hanok Village can be found north of Seoul City Centre.

The most convenient way to visit is to drive, and there is limited free parking in the village. Alternatively, there’s paid parking in the history museum.

If you’re not driving, you can easily get here by a mix of the Seoul subway and bus, and the journey will take around 45 minutes.

Firstly, take the metro to Gupabal Station or Yeonsinnae Station, then take either bus 7211 or 7723 to the village.

Alternatively, you can take a direct bus from Myeongdong Shopping Street or Seoul Station to the village.

Service 701 heads straight there, and the journey also takes 45-60 minutes. This is what I did as I despise transferring.

Make sure to purchase a T-Money Card from any convenience store to pay for public transport. Also, Google Maps does not work well. So, download Naver Map or Kakao Map for directions.

Opening hours and entry fees

As Eunpyeong Hanok Village is a residential area, the streets are technically open 24 hours a day.

But none of the restaurants or museums (save the convenience store) will be open until at least 9 -10 am.

It’s also completely free to visit this magical village in Seoul, but set aside some funds for the café and museum entry fees.

Things to do in Eunpyeong Hanok Village

Eunpyeong Hanok Village may be a small traditional settlement, but there are plenty of incredible attractions that make it worth visiting.

You could spend an entire morning strolling around the labyrinth of traditional hanok streets and soaking in the atmosphere.

But there are also panoramic cafés, museums, and temples to delight in.

Here are all the magical things to do in Eunpyeong Hanok Village.

1. 1in1jan Cafe & Rooftop

The best thing to do in Eunpyeong Hanok Village is visit the incredible 1in1jan café.

They have an elevated eatery with tables by a large window that overlook the entire Hanok village, and the enchanting views are out of this world.

The best tables are on the third floor, and you will have to queue up well in advance if you want the ones by the window.

I waited over 30 minutes before opening and fortunately managed to secure one.

I loved having an iced coffee and cake with these breathtaking views in the backdrop.

Just prepare for these tables to be incredibly busy, and the photo mania will be non-stop the entire time you’re there.

After you’ve finished your coffee, don’t miss the chance to visit their panoramic rooftop with the best views of the village.

If you would rather escape the chaos downstairs, you can sit up here instead. It would make a great place for sundowners.

I’m actually going to write a separate guide for 1in1jan café as there are so many tips I want to share about visiting. So, watch this space.

2. Explore the charming streets

When you visit a charming village like this, one of the best things to do is simply get lost in its pretty streets without a plan.

You can take a wander through the gorgeous maze of traditional-style houses.

I loved spotting all the colourful flowers, ornate doorways and zodiac animals.

As there were fewer people in the streets, it felt like a much more authentic experience than other more famous hanok villages.

Why not hire a traditional hanbok to take photos? They even have hanboks in the visitor centre you can hire for free.

Remember, as it’s a residential village, speak in hushed voices while exploring and don’t pry into people’s homes.

3. Eunpyeong History & Hanok Museum

If you want to learn more about Eunpyeong-gu, you should visit the Eunpyeong History & Hanok Museum.

It is a huge exhibition hall with three floors containing 7,500 items related to this scenic area.

You can learn about their rich cultural heritage, and there’s an entire exhibit about how they built the hanoks.

Kids will love the toy museum, and there are interactive displays that make it a fun experience.

Afterwards, you can head up to a panoramic rooftop to take in stunning views of the village and mountains.

4. Jingwan Wildlife Protection Reserve

A place I really loved exploring was the nature reserve in the heart of the village.

You can meander along the wooden boardwalk over a small marsh to take in the views of the lush trees and tall reeds.

It’s also a wildlife protection area. So, you can look out for all the frogs, birds and bugs that call this place home.

5. Jingwansa Temple

If you’re feeling energetic, you can hike for twenty minutes above the village to visit Jingwansa Temple, one of four Buddhist temples in Seoul.

It has a history of over 1000 years and was built to honour a monk who saved King Hyeonjong’s life during the Joseon Dynasty.

It suffered a fire during the Korean War and had to be reconstructed, but is now a peaceful sanctuary and nature retreat. It’s free to visit.

One of the best times to go is during autumn when the lush nature here becomes a riot of red and orange hues.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have time on my visit. But it’s definitely on my list.

6. Visit the Hanok CU Convenience Store

Lastly, if you’re looking for a drink or light bites in Eunpyeong Hanok Village, why not visit the CU Convenience Store?

I know that corner stores are a dime a dozen in South Korea, but this store is unique as it’s set in a traditional Hanok building!

As I arrived in the village early in the morning and was pretty tired, this was the only place open selling iced coffee.

They have a lovely set of tables outside where you can take in panoramic views of this fairytale village.

Is Eunpyeong Hanok Village worth visiting?

Yes, I had such a whimsical time on my visit to Eunpyeong Hanok Village. It’s certainly a place that left a lasting impression.

Compared to the more popular Bukchon Hanok Village, this is an oasis in Seoul and a great escape from the crowds.

It also felt like a far more authentic experience as there was hardly anyone around.

Also, the fairytale views from 1in1jan café were out of this world. Although it was a little chaotic inside, I would still go back in a heartbeat.

Don’t skip Seoul’s secret hanok village; it’s a gateway to the past that you shouldn’t miss out on.

How long do you need to visit?

I would set aside around 1-3 hours to visit Eunpyeong Hanok Village.

This way, you can visit the village, 1in1jan café and make the trek to Jingwansa Temple comfortably.

It’s quite far from Seoul City Centre if you’re heading here by bus. So, make sure to factor in your travel time.

I spent a relaxed morning here and relished every second. It’s such an beautiful place with mountain views as far as the eye can see.
