One of the best day trips from Osaka is Minoh Park, a peaceful retreat in nature and a world away from the chaos of Dotonbori.

A highlight is Minoh Falls, an enchanting cascade with a lagoon embraced by weeping trees and lush foliage.

The best time to visit would be the momiji season, when autumn transforms this park into a colourful scene from a fairytale.

But you can enjoy this magical cascade in the mountains all year. The park is an oasis from the city crowds and is well worth your time.

My friend and I visited after a trip to Katsuoji Temple, and we both loved it.

Here is how to visit Minoh Falls in Minoh Park on a day trip from Osaka.

Introducing Minoh Park in Japan

Minoh Park (also spelt Minoo) is a national park in Japan, and the full name is Meiji no Mori Minō Quasi-National Park.

It was established in 1967 and named after the 100th anniversary of the accession of Emperor Meiji.

It’s located in a mountain valley filled with tall trees and is home to thousands of species of plants and insects.

The main reason people visit this paradise is due to Minoh Falls, a magical cascade nestled in foliage.

The park is 20 kilometres north of central Osaka, and its proximity makes it a popular day trip.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Minoh Falls would be during momiji season, or autumn, in late November to early December.

This is when all the trees turn vibrant reds, oranges and yellows, and it transforms into a whimsical wonderland!

The scenery will be breathtaking during this time, and it’s a paradise for photography.

However, Minoh Park is open all year around and there’s no ‘bad’ time to go.

It will be just as impressive in other seasons and makes a lovely escape from the city.

Minoh Park is located around 20 kilometres north of central Osaka.

This is around a 45-minute drive or a 1-hour journey using public transport and walking/taxi.

By far, the easiest way to visit would be to drive, and there is some parking available near the start of the trail to the waterfall.

Thinking of a road trip? I recommend renting a car through RentalCars, where you can book with free cancellation. Click here to book.

Can you visit Minoh Falls without a car?

You used to be able to. Unfortunately, they have discontinued the bus service that ran from Minoh-Kayano Station to Minoh Park.

At the time of writing, they have not provided a replacement.

The Hankyu-Bus now only runs from Minoh-Kayano station to Katsuoji Temple and back.

It’s still very easy to visit both the temple and the waterfall in one day by taking a mix of bus and taxis.

Of course, it’s not cheap, but it is doable. You can always split the cost with others who want to do the same thing.

The distance between the two attractions is just under 4 kilometres, but I wouldn’t recommend walking there.

The route is on a steep switchback road with fast cars and no sidewalk.

Katsuoji Temple & Minoh Falls day trip

If you’re planning to visit both Katsuoji Temple and Minoh Falls in one day, I would always recommend visiting the temple first.

You can take the Osaka metro to Minoh-Kayano station and then take a bus from platform 8.

I will warn you, the buses are regular, but they are going to have long lines and be packed! We took a taxi to save time.

Once you’ve visited the temple, you can then get another taxi to Minoh Falls.

There’s a taxi rank just outside the entrance, and the journey is 8 minutes. It will cost around ¥1,200 – ¥1,500 one way.

To return to Osaka, either take a taxi back down to Minoh-Kayano station or take another taxi to the temple and get the bus back down.

Walk down to Minoh Falls

We took a taxi from Katsuoji-Temple to Minoh Falls and were dropped off at the parking area and taxi rank.

This was a few hundred metres away from the start of the trail, but the waterfall is well sign-posted.

At the top of the ridge, we had sweeping views over the valley. It was like a breathtaking blanket of autumn colours.

You’ll then enter the park and slowly make your way down a winding trail to the Mino River.

This path was like walking through a fantasy world with a canopy of ruby red leaves.

The bright colours and thick mist from the rainfall made it look utterly magical.

The walk to the waterfall will only take around 15 minutes from the top, but every corner reveals something stunning.

Minoh Waterfall Walk

Strolling the Mino River

The trail will eventually lead you to the Mino River with a pathway leading to the waterfall.

The scenery looked like something plucked from the pages of a fairytale, with the swaying trees, russet path and teahouses perched on the banks.

You’ll be surrounded by magical momiji foliage, and it was beautiful to behold.

As you make your way towards the waterfall, you’ll encounter romantic bridges over the babbling river with a few smaller cascades.

Eventually, you’ll see a larger bridge with a red fence, and Minoh Waterfall is just behind this.

Arriving at Minoh waterfall

One of the main reasons people visit Minoh Park is this magical waterfall. It’s an impressive 33-metre tall cascade that crashes into a lagoon below.

It’s surrounded by maple trees, so the leaves turn a vibrant red during momiji season.

This gorgeous scene looked like an oil painting, and I almost couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was utterly breathtaking.

Of course, it’s a great place to take photos. But there is a small area to sit down in front of the cascade to appreciate it as well.

Is Minoh Falls worth visiting?

Yes, Minoh Falls is a beautiful cascade in Japan worth visiting.

Even though we had heavy rainfall during our visit, I thought the mist made it even more enchanting.

I love being in nature, and hearing the sounds of the crashing water brought me a sense of calm. It was a much-needed escape from city crowds.

If you’re not driving, it can be a bit more challenging to get here, but it was worth every penny to see this spectacular waterfall in the fall.

How long do you need to visit Minoo Falls?

If you just want to visit Minoh Waterfall, I would say you need around an hour.

The walk down from the parking area will take around 15 minutes, and the waterfall is easy to access.

If you’re visiting during momiji season, you’ll be stopping every few minutes for photos, so I would plan a little longer.

But, you could easily spend half a day exploring Minoh Park as there are lots of things to do, like temples, museums, restaurants and hiking trails.

How much are tickets?

There is no fee to enter Minoo Park or to visit Minoh Falls; it’s completely free of charge.

As the park has no entry gates, the waterfall is also open 24 hours a day. So, you can visit any time you like.

I found this park an oasis without too many crowds, even in peak fall season. So, it should be relatively quiet when you choose to visit.

My top tips

  • Make sure to wear some sensible shoes like trainers for the hiking trails
  • Some wild macaque monkeys roam this area. We didn’t encounter any, but if you do, do not feed or approach them.
  • Bring some cash for the vendors located around the area if/when they reopen.
  • There is a taxi rank located just a short walk away from the main entrance. Most of our taxi journeys took card payments.

Things to do nearby

We had planned some other activities while we were here, like the insect museum, Ryuan-ji Temple, and purchasing some momiji tempura.

But this was no longer possible due to a devastating fire that destroyed the nearby shops and buildings.

They closed off much of the park, and many of the restaurants also closed in solidarity.

While disappointing, this was insignificant compared with the loss experienced by the business owners and community who were affected.

I can’t imagine the gravity of this tragedy and how they are feeling.

Thankfully, no one was physically hurt, and I hope that the owners can recover quickly and get back on their feet.

Don’t forget to visit Katsuo-ji Temple

If you’re planning to visit Minoh Park for fall foliage, then you have to pair a visit with Katsuo-ji Temple, the temple of winning fortune or luck.

It’s located on a mountainside and is filled with thousands of lucky daruma dolls.

A special part of visiting is their temple stamp trail, where you can collect a series of stamps to reveal an ink portrait.

You can also get lots of photos with their daruma displays, buy daruma sponge cakes and visit the gift shop filled with lucky doll souvenirs.

Purchase a ticket in advance to save time and to get there first thing. It is no longer a “hidden gem” and was packed on our visit.

You can buy tickets on the official website, or you can use Klook, which I found much easier to use.
