10+ Split Game of Thrones Locations You Can Visit (2026)!

Did you know that there are many Split Game of Thrones filming locations you can visit in Croatia?

Although most fans will know of Dubrovnik as King’s Landing, Split also has some locations used in the show.

Split was mainly used to film Meereen City, where Daenerys liberates the people with her Unsullied.

So, you can visit her dragon dungeons, a museum and even sit on the Iron Throne. As a huge fan of the series, I was in my element.

Here are all the Split Game of Thrones filming locations & attractions you can visit. 

Was Game of Thrones filmed in Split?

Yes, the production used the city of Split in Croatia as Meereen City in the fourth, fifth and sixth seasons of the show.

They used locations like Diocletian’s Palace and Klis Fortress to bring Essos and Slaver’s Bay to life.

You will instantly recognise some of these streets, and fans can follow in the footsteps of Daenerys, Tyrion, Grey Worm and the Sons of the Harpy. 

Split Game of Thrones Locations 

So, where was Game of Thrones filmed in Split?

Well, they used many of the famous attractions in the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to create Meereen City in the show.

The great thing is that you can visit many of these locations for free or for a small fee. 

Here are all the Split Game of Thrones filming locations you can visit.

1. Diocletian Palace Cellars / Meereen Dungeons

The most recognisable location has to be the Diocletian Palace Cellars.

This underbelly of Split was used as the Meereen Dungeons, where Daenerys kept her dragons! 

As you wander around this labyrinth of tunnels, you can just imagine Viserion and Rhaegal chained up here and their fiery rage.

There is a free section of these cellars you can visit before you walk to the main courtyard, or Peristil of Diocletian’s Palace, home to a small bazaar.

But the museum with the main filming location costs €8. As a history lover, I really loved this museum. It was fascinating to learn its secrets. 

2. Golden Gate / Targaryen Flag

The Golden Gate is the ancient entrance of Diocletian’s Palace, and years ago, it was reserved solely for Emperor Diocletian.

Nowadays, hundreds of tourists use this gate to enter the Old Town, and I can imagine he is rolling in his grave at the prospect. 

This gate was also the location where they hung up the Targaryen Flag in Game of Thrones once Daenerys took control of Meereen City.

It’s a very busy area, so make sure to wake up with the lark to capture it without the crowds.

3. Vestibul / Sons of the Harpy Ambush 

You’ll find the Vestibul right beside the main courtyard or Peristil of Diocletian’s Palace.

It’s a rotunda with an opening to the gods, and it used to be another ancient entrance to the palace. 

In Game of Thrones, we see Grey Worm being ambushed by the Sons of the Harpy here, and Ser Barristan helps save the day.

This was one of my favourite Split Game of Thrones filming locations, and you can visit the top to look down for a small fee. 

4. Papalićeva Street / Meereen City

As you wander around the labyrinth of streets and alleyways in Diocletian’s Palace, you can’t help but feel like you’re in a movie set.

There were many streets in the Old Town that the Game of Thrones team used as filming locations.

The main one is Papalićeva Street, where Grey Worm leads the charge to free the slaves from the Masters. 

There are also some other streets used as dark alleyways and dingy corners where the Unsullied fight the Sons of the Harpy:

1. Papalićeva Street
2. Bernardin Street
3. Andrija Alješi Street 

5. Split Game Of Thrones Museum

After you’ve ticked off all the filming locations, you have to visit the Split Game of Thrones Museum. 

It’s a small but magical attraction where they have recreated scenes and props from every season of the show.

If I’m being completely honest, I thought tickets were overpriced considering the size and quality of the exhibition.

But it’s still fun if you’re a fan. There are lots of great photo opportunities, and it brought back some great memories. 

6. Sit on the Iron Throne

The best part about visiting the Split Game of Thrones Museum is the gift shop, which has an Iron Throne.

As a fan, I thought that this was a great souvenir to remember my trip to Meereen City.

Visitors to the museum get to sit on the Iron Throne for free. But if you didn’t buy a ticket, you have to buy something in the gift shop to sit on it.

You get a 10% discount if you show a valid museum ticket at checkout.

Split Game of Thrones Walking Tour

You can visit all of these filming locations on your own, as they are easily accessible.

However, the best way to experience these places is by taking a Split Game of Thrones walking tour.

You’ll be shown around the city by a local guide who will not only show you the filming locations but also let you in on some behind-the-scenes secrets.

Game of Thrones Locations near Split

So, that’s all the Split Game of Thrones filming locations in the city centre. But don’t fret, the adventure is not over yet.

There are still a few locations to visit just outside of Split.

Many of these places you can visit by car, public transport, or with an organised tour. 

7. Klis Fortress / Meereen

Klis Fortress is another one of the most recognisable Split Game of Thrones filming locations.

It’s an ancient fortress with thousands of years of history and was used for Meereen.

Daenerys takes the Great Pyramid by inciting a slave revolt. She then liberates the people, gaining the nickname “Breaker of Chains”. 

After her victory, you’ll see her walk up the stairs of this fortress to give her speech as their new ruler. 

Even if you’re not the biggest fan of Game of Thrones, this fortress is well worth visiting. The history and views are out of this world.

8. Žrnovnica / Way to Meereen

Žrnovnica is a village near Split that was another filming location.

We first see the Žrnovnica water mill used for Missandei’s bathing scene, where Grey Worm watches her.

Later, the quarry was used for the entrance to Meereen. Later, this was where Daario Naharis fought the Meereenese champion. 

We also see some of the dramatic battle scenes filmed here, where Daenerys takes Meereen with her army of Unsullied. 

9. Kaštilac / Braavos

Kaštilac is a hidden gem on the Dalmatian coast and a fortress built by Benedictine nuns. They were gifted the land by King Zvonmir in 1078. 

In the 15th century, the abbess ordered for the island fort to be constructed as a protection from Ottoman invasion. 

You’ll recognise Kaštel Gomilica in Game of Thrones as it was a filming location for the Free City of Braavos. 

The island formed part of the Free City when Arya Stark first arrived in the port and later began her training with Jaqen H’ghar.

I travelled here by bus, and it’s very easy to do. Regular buses head to Trogir from Split, and you can stop off on the way.

10. Trogir / Qarth

The last Split Game of Thrones filming location I recommend visiting is Trogir.

This gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage Site is only a 30-minute drive, or a 1-hour bus ride, from Split and makes a great day trip. 

In the show, they used the city streets as the backdrop of Qarth in season two. 

Daenerys is hosted in a villa, and you can find this location in the cloisters of St Dominic’s Monastery.  

I spent a wonderful day here, and it was easily a highlight of my time in Split.

There’s plenty to do here, including climbing up St Lawrence’s Cathedral bell tower or visiting Kamerlengo Castle.

How long do you need to visit?

If you only want to visit the Split Game of Thrones filming locations in the city, you can do this in a single day with Klis Fortress.

If you want to see more of the filming locations in the wider area, you will need around 2-3 days to see them all.

Split is a wonderful base for day trips in Dalmatia. From here, you can visit incredible destinations such as Hvar Island and Krka National Park.

More Game of Thrones in Croatia

Although Split does have a claim to fame, the real Game of Thrones pilgrimage in Croatia is Dubrovnik.

This is where many scenes of King’s Landing in the Old Town were filmed.

As soon as you enter through Pile Gate, you’ll see where the King’s Landing Riots took place.

Pile Harbour is where Myrcella leaves for Dorne, and Lovrijenac Fort played the Red Keep. 

Minčeta Tower featured as the House of the Undying in Dubrovnik City Walls, and the Ethnographic Museum was Littlefinger’s Brothel. 

You can visit Bokar Fortress to visit Blackwater Bay, or step inside The Rector’s Palace to experience Qarth. 

You can even visit the Jesuit Stairs to see where Cersei had her ‘Walk of Shame’. 

Better yet, why not sail to Lokrum Island? This also played Qarth in the series, and you can even sit on the Iron Throne!
