Have you heard of Prague’s Magical Cavern? It’s an otherworldly art gallery that is like a portal to another realm.

You can tumble down a rabbit hole and meander through an obscure grotto to find surreal portraits, sculptures and exhibits.

As someone obsessed with fantasy worlds, I had an enchanting time. It’s a whimsical wonderland and a must-see in Prague.

Here is a complete guide to visiting the Magical Cavern and what to expect.

What is the Magical Cavern in Prague?

The Magical Cavern is a subterranean art gallery that showcases a fantasy realm called ‘Argondia’.

The Czech painter Reon Argondian (Jan Zahradník) created this mystical grotto with colourful caverns, fake stalactites and tree structures.

You can explore over 80 vibrant portraits of dreamy landscapes with mythical creatures, deities and dragons.

It’s easily one of Prague’s quirkiest attractions and a hidden gem where you can escape the crowds and even reality for a spell.

How to Visit the Magical Cavern in Prague

The Magical Cavern sits on Petřín Hill, a gorgeous green space with panoramic city views.

To get there, take Metro Line A to Malostranská and then a tram to Pohorelec.

From Pohorelec, you can walk up to the gallery via Strahovska street. But fair warning, it’s very steep.

Alternatively, you can take the Petřín Hill Funicular straight to the gallery for a small fee. It runs every 10 minutes.

Opening times & entry prices

The Magical Cavern is open daily in Prague from 11 am-7 pm, so you have plenty of time to visit.

If the door isn’t open, ring the doorbell, and someone will be with you in no time.

Tickets are €10, which isn’t much to enjoy a unique attraction like this. You’ll pay at the front door, and they prefer cash.

Journey through Argondia

Once you’ve paid to enter the gallery, your journey through Argondia starts by descending a spiralling celestial staircase.

It’s filled with fantasy portraits of the zodiac signs reimagined as deities.

Can you spot your star sign? I loved my version of Pisces with a green sea goddess and her trident.

Basement Gallery

Eventually, you’ll reach the basement grotto, the heart of the Magical Cavern.

You can explore colourful catacombs filled with pagan statues, stalactites, mirrors and foliage.

A hodgepodge of fantasy portraits hang on the walls, featuring fire-breathing dragons, ethereal goddesses, mythical creatures, and lost realms.

One cosy room has a sofa where you can relax for a while, surrounded by surreal scenes.

Incense floats through the air, ambient music sets the scene, and it feels like an escape into a dreamlike space.

You’ll also find lots of newspaper clippings and articles that mention Reon Argondian and celebrate his life achievements.

Upper Gallery

After exploring the lower rainbow caverns, make your way back up the spiral staircase to the upper-floor gallery.

Here, you’ll find even more wonderful fantasy paintings by Reon Argondian to admire.

Some of Roan’s artwork here is for sale, so it’s worth enquiring if any pieces take your fancy.

I’m obsessed with dragons, and I had my eye on a few portraits with them. If only I had the funds and a home to hang them in. A girl can dream.

I loved that there were plenty of comfy armchairs and rocking chairs to sit in, relax, and absorb the enchanting artwork.

Eventually, it’s time to leave this incredible fantasy realm and climb out of the rabbit hole to reality.

For me, this included a long walk back down Petřín Hill in the pouring rain.

How long do you need to visit?

You’ll need at least 30 minutes to explore the gallery. Also factor in travel time, since it’s perched on Petřín Hill.

It’s spread across three floors, and there’s a lot to take in, so don’t rush.

However, there is no time limit if you want to escape reality for a bit longer. I wouldn’t blame you!
