Kutná Hora is a highly underrated city in the Czech Republic, filled with historic and cultural attractions.
Affectionately known as the City of Silver, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site with stunning cathedrals, medieval mines and art galleries.
Most visitors make a beeline to Sedlec Ossuary, or the Bone Church, but there are plenty of other amazing things to do here as well.
You can easily visit as a day trip from Prague or stay overnight as part of a road trip.
Here are all the magical things to do in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic.
A brief history of Kutná Hora
Kutna Hora is famous for its silver mines, and it’s thought that the precious ore was being excavated here as far back as the 10th century.
The mines quickly made this settlement prosperous, and by the 14th century, King Wenceslas II decreed it a royal city.
The glittering jewel of its crown is the Gothic St Barbara’s Cathedral, which has had many transformations over time.
The Jesuits also left a footprint on Kutná Hora in the 17th century after the Hussite Wars.
They built a college here, which was later a military barracks and is now a famous art gallery.
Most visitors flock here to visit the historic parish of Sedlec. Here, you can step inside Sedlec Ossuary, which contains over 40,000 human bones.
Today, Kutná Hora is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is well worth visiting.
Why should you visit?
Kutná Hora makes an amazing Prague day trip with interesting attractions for every type of traveller. But it’s a history, art and cultural lover’s paradise.
You can wander through enchanting cobbled streets, explore stunning cathedrals, visit medieval silver mines and even a bone church.
You can always find something incredible around every corner.
Recently, it has had a resurgence in popularity due to its appearance in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.
Players can explore ‘Kuttenberg’ in the open-world game where you role-play as Henry of Skalitz. I am a wee bit obsessed with it.
You must add this incredible historic city to your Czech Republic bucket list. Here are all the amazing things to do in Kutná Hora during a visit.
Things to do in Kutná Hora
1. Sedlec Ossuary
By far, one of the most popular things to do in Kutná Hora is to visit Sedlec Ossuary.
It is a hauntingly beautiful and sacred space that is filled with over 40,000 real human bones.
Inside this tiny Roman Catholic temple, you’ll find skulls and bones piled up and arranged in different artworks, including pyramids, a chandelier, and a coat of arms.
This was due to an excess of bones from burials during the Hussite War, and they hired a carpenter called František Rint to reorganise them.
You do have to pay to visit, and you can buy tickets online or at the ossuary on the day.
I recommend spending around 30 minutes to an hour here. It’s a small space, but it’s utterly fascinating.
Just remember to be respectful during your visit, and be warned that photography is not allowed.

2. Sedlec Cathedral
Just down the road from the ossuary, you can visit the Our Lady of Assumption and St John the Baptist Cathedral.
Sedlec Abbey was a former Cistercian monastery and was founded in 1142. It was one of the first Cistercian religious sites in the Kingdom of Bohemia.
Unfortunately, a great fire destroyed much of the church in 1421 and killed many of the monks inside the building.
It wasn’t until the 17th century, after the abbey was dissolved, that the cathedral was rebuilt in the Baroque Style.
It finally became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
You can buy a joint ticket for the cathedral and ossuary at the ticket office in Kutná Hora or pre-book your tickets online.
You cannot buy tickets at the cathedral itself.
3. St Barbara’s Cathedral
After the Sedlec Parish, I recommend taking a local bus to the historic centre. You can then explore all of the Old Town attractions.
One of the most famous things to do in Kutná Hora is to visit the impressive St Barbara’s Cathedral.
Kutná Hora is known as the City of Silver due to its silver mines, and the Christian martyr St Barbara is the patron saint of miners.
So, it makes sense that a temple was built to honour her here.
Did you know? For all you Kingdom Come: Deliverance fans out there, St Barbara’s Cathedral features in the second game. You’ll see a similar building in Kuttenberg.
Admiring the building from the outside is worth your time, as the architecture is breathtaking.
The cathedral was originally constructed in the 14th century, but it has had many reconstructions over time that gave it its Gothic facade.
I recommend purchasing a ticket to explore inside. The interiors are staggering and there is so much to see.
On your self-guided tour, you can find many rare Gothic frescoes to admire, a Renaissance pulpit, historic paintings and colourful stained glass.

4. Corpus Christi Chapel
A hidden gem that many miss when visiting the area around St Barbara’s Cathedral is the Corpus Christi Chapel.
That’s because it’s under Barborska, but it’s well worth stopping by.
It’s closely linked to the cathedral, as it was a cemetery chapel with the bottom floor being used to store bones.
It has since had many uses over the centuries. It was a storehouse and later an organ workshop.
Today, it stands empty, but the stunning vaulted architecture remains. It makes a fabulous photo opportunity.
It’s completely free to visit and, more importantly, allows you to escape some of the crowds in this area.
5. Barborska Street
The iconic postcard-worthy views of Kutna Hora are mainly found on Barborska, the main throughway to St Barbara’s Cathedral.
It’s a stunning cobbled lane dating back to the Jesuits of the 17th century.
Along the wall, you’ll find 13 Baroque statues of patron saints, including Saint Barbara.
It makes a beautiful photo opportunity, especially with the Gothic cathedral in the backdrop.
I loved visiting here at sunset once the crowds had departed. It was so peaceful.
If you look over the wall, you’ll get an incredible panoramic view of the valley below and spot many historic buildings.
It’s easily one of the best things to do in Kutna Hora.
6. Jesuit College
The stunning historic building on this famous street is the Jesuit College.
The academy was founded in 1667 and built by the Austrian-Italian architect Giovanni Domenico Orsi.
The Jesuits used this college for education on religious studies and philosophy until their order was abolished in 1773.
It then turned into a military barracks named after Jan Roháč of Dubá.
Today, part of the Jesuit College is home to GASK, or the Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region.
You do have to pay to visit, but there is plenty of incredible artwork to find inside.
You can get an incredible view of both Barborska and the Jesuit college from a viewpoint on top of the Corpus Christi Chapel.

7. Hrádek Silver Mine
Another one of the most popular things to do in Kutná Hora is to take a tour of Hrádek Silver Mine.
This is what made the city famous and gave it the nickname ‘City of Silver’.
It can be found in a 15th-century building called ‘Hrádek’, or Little Castle.
This house was originally part of the city’s fortifications but was later rebuilt as a residence for Jan Smíšek.
Smíšek was an administrator of the royal mines who grew rich by illegally extracting silver from the stores underneath this house!
During your tour, you can learn about medieval silver mining, how the city operated under mining and even how coins were smelted in a replica facility.
Then, the true highlight is a walk through 250 metres of medieval mining tunnels deep underground.
You’ll need to wear a traditional white coat and a hard hat with a lantern, which is hilarious but will make you look the part.
Be warned, some of the gaps in the rock are tiny, and you’ll need to squeeze your way through.
There’s also a moment of ‘pure darkness’, so don’t do this activity if you’re easily spooked.
I do not recommend doing this tour if you’re claustrophobic. The ‘test’ area they let you try is much larger than the actual tunnels. Many of our group started to panic, I was in tears, and someone had to be escorted out. I’m glad I did it, but I did crash out.
8. Italian Court
The Italian Court is a palace you can visit that used to be the seat of the Central Mint of Prague.
The name comes from the Italian experts who led the minting reforms.
You can pay for a tour and visit their silver museum, which tells you about the coin maker workshops called Smithies.
You’ll also enter the former minting chamber or Preghaus that made the Prague groschen (another KCD reference).
Later, it became one of the royal residences of King Wenceslas IV, as he fell in love with the city.
You can wander through the elaborate audience hall, staterooms, and a royal chapel.
9. Gothic Stone Fountain
Strangely enough, one of my favourite attractions was the Gothic Stone Fountain on Rejsek Square.
Dating back to the 15th century, it’s a large, twelve-sided reservoir that supplied the city with drinking water after a shortage due to mining.
It’s no longer used for this purpose today; it stopped supplying water in 1890. But the stunning fountain remains.
The carving work is utterly gorgeous, and it makes a fabulous photo opportunity. They even light it up at night.

10. Wander the Old Town streets
One of the best things to do in Kutná Hora is to take a walk around and get lost in the historic streets to see what you can find.
One of the most interesting attractions is the Baroque Plague Column on Vaclavske namesti.
It was erected in 1715 to remember the thousands of victims of the plague that struck the city. It has mining motifs and a statue of the Virgin Mary.
Beyond that, here are some other points of interest you can find;
- Three kings house
- Tyl house
- Alchemists house
- Sankturin house
- Stone house
11. Have lunch at Dačický Restaurant
I’ve had the privilege of visiting Kutná Hora a few times now, and every time I visit the incredible Dačický Restaurant.
The interiors feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the medieval era, with medieval paintings, wooden tables and chandeliers.
They also have a roaring fire going in winter, which adds a cosy vibe. Or, there’s a beer garden in summer.
On the menu, you can try some traditional Bohemian cuisine that uses menus from the 16th century.
I thoroughly enjoyed their wild boar goulash with gingerbread fruit dumplings. But, whatever you order, you will not leave hungry.
You can also order some of their many locally brewed beers by the litre. I honestly dream about when I can head back here again!
It is a very popular choice, so I recommend making a reservation. But I’ve never had an issue walking in and finding a table.
12. GASK Gardens Sculpture Park
One of the best views of St Barbara’s Cathedral and the Jesuit College can be seen from the GASK gardens at the top of the historic bastion levels.
While taking in the panoramic views, you also go sculpture spotting. There are many permanent and temporary artworks to browse.
The gardens are free to visit and well worth stopping by if you have the time. They often hold events here and open-air cinema events too.
13. Church of St James
Another Sedlec temple that gets far less attention than the rest is the Romanesque St James’ Church.
It was constructed on a hill above Klejnárka River in the middle of Jakub village in 1165, and the chapel was built in the Romanesque style.
As part of your visit, you can climb up the church tower to get amazing views over Kutna Hora & Sedlec.
Getting up to the top is quite a challenge with narrow spaces and uneven steps. So, take care.
Unfortunately, it was closed on my visit. It’s only open on weekends in April & October and daily from May – September.
14. Kačina Castle Library
Kačina Castle Library is arguably one of the most beautiful libraries in Europe, and it’s just a stone’s throw away from Kutná Hora.
This majestic circular book trove was built for the Chotek Family and contains over 40,000 rare books.
You can visit as part of a tour of Kačina Castle, one of the most significant examples of the Empire Style architecture found in the Czech Republic.
The estate is only a 15-minute bus ride away from Kutna Hora’s main station, but just know that bus services are limited.
It’s easiest to arrive by car, and there is ample parking onsite.

Is Kutná Hora worth visiting?
Yes, Kutná Hora is well worth visiting. It’s such a unique city that is filled with interesting attractions for every type of traveller.
Most tourists head here to visit the evocative Sedlec Ossuary, but there is plenty to do here to fill up an entire day.
It’s also a great way to escape the busy crowds of Prague and explore some of the Czech countryside.
As a Kingdom Come: Deliverance fan, I fell in love with this city all over again. It felt surreal to walk around the streets of Kuttenberg in real life.
Don’t skip a visit to Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic; it has to be on your travel bucket list.
How to travel to Kutná Hora from Prague
Most visitors travel to Kutna Hora from Prague, and it’s an easy journey to make.
Kutná Hora is only an hour away from Prague Main Station by train, and you can book tickets online via the official Czech trains website called Cesky Drahy.
Of course, if you have a car, Kutná Hora is an easy hour’s drive from Prague. There are lots of parking options once you arrive.

How to get around Kutná Hora
It’s good to note that you will arrive at Kutná Hora hl.n station from Prague.
This is located around 4 kilometres away from the Old Town and 1 kilometre from the Sedlec area.
From the train station, you can walk to the Sedlec Ossuary in around 15 minutes or to the Old Town in around 45 minutes.
I recommend taking the affordable local bus services to travel to Sedlec and the main attractions.
There is no need to buy bus tickets in advance; you can tap your contactless cards when you board.
It’s easy enough to look at the bus timetables when you arrive, or you can use Google Maps for bus schedules. I found these to be accurate.
Once you arrive in Kutná Hora Old Town, all of the attractions are easy to explore on foot as the historic area is largely pedestrianised.
How long do you need in Kutná Hora?
Most people travel to Kutná Hora only for a day as part of a trip from Prague, and one day is usually enough.
In one day, you could easily visit Sedlec Ossuary and the main attractions in the old town.
But if you want to experience the magic of Kutna Hora, I recommend spending the night here.
That way, you can see everything without rushing and plan some excursions, such as Kačina Castle and beyond.
