Ojstrica Hike – How to Visit for Fairytale Views of Lake Bled (2026)!

If you’re looking for the best views over Lake Bled, then you must visit Ojstrica.

This magical viewpoint provides a fairytale scene of Bled Island, Bled Castle and the Karavanke mountains. 

It’s the panorama that’s on all the postcards, and I have had it on my bucket list for so long.

Seeing it with my own eyes was a dream come true. But the hike to get up here is far from a fairytale and requires effort. 

Here is the truth about the Ojstrica hike in Lake Bled, and the reality of getting those picture-perfect photos. 

What is Ojstrica?

Ojstrica is a large hill that towers over Lake Bled and means ‘Sharp Peak’ in Slovene. It gets its name from its pointed shape. 

But most people refer to Ojstrica when talking about the popular viewpoint that provides a postcard-worthy view of Lake Bled. 

The scene is instantly recognisable and can be found on the cover of almost every travel guide about Slovenia. 

It’s a plateau with an elevation of around 611 metres above sea level (2,000 feet). 

But you can access the view from the lakeside in approximately twenty minutes (give or take).

What’s the difference between Ojstrica and Osojnica?

There are three trailheads in Lake Bled with similar names that lead to fantastic viewpoints in this area.

But, they are completely different hikes, with different vantages and come with their own levels of difficulty;

1. Ojstrica viewpoint – A lower viewpoint with unobstructed romantic views of Lake Bled. This is the ‘easiest’ to visit.
2. Mala Osojnica – the most popular viewpoint with higher views and a challenging path. There is also a fence blocking the view for photos. 
3. Velika Osojnica – an even higher viewpoint with elevated views. It’s difficult, but it has a cute heart bench at the top.

As it was autumn and the trails were already pretty slippery from rainfall, I decided to only hike to Ojstrica on my visit. 

I found that this viewpoint had the best value for effort in terms of scenery and photography opportunities.

But, as the paths are connected, you can always visit two or all three viewpoints in one go if the trails are dry and you’re feeling energetic! 

How to visit Ojstrica 

There are multiple ways that you can visit the start of the Ojstrica hike in Lake Bled.

• On foot – if you’re staying in Lake Bled, chances are your hotel is on the opposite side of the lake to the trailhead. So, you will need to walk around the lake for 30/45 minutes to start the hike (around 3 kilometres). You will eventually find an opening in the forest with a tiny green signpost to let you know you’ve arrived.

• By car – you can park near the start of the walking trail at Camping Bled and then walk for 10 minutes to reach the start of the trail. The car park costs a few euros an hour, but there are heavy fines for parking on the road.

• By bus – the nearest bus stop to Ostrijca would be the Bled Mlino bus stop. From there, it will take around 15 minutes to the start. 

• By train – you can alight at Bled Jezero and walk 10 minutes to the start of the hike.

Opening hours & ticket prices

Ojstrica is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you can visit this viewpoint any time you like.

I wouldn’t visit in the dark, though. There is no artificial lighting, and you probably won’t see much.

If you do end up hiking in low lighting before sunrise or after sunset, make sure to take a torch or use the one on your phone!

Ojstrica is completely free to visit and makes a great budget activity in Lake Bled. 

Ojstrica hiking directions 

Here is the way I visited Ojstrica and my personal experience with the hike. Just keep in mind that your visit may look a little different.

It may take you less time or a lot longer, and it could also be a lot easier or harder for you.

It all depends on your level of fitness and ability, the weather conditions and the quality of the terrain on the day.

1. The walk around Lake Bled

Lake Bled is easily one of the most enchanting destinations in the world, and so walking around the lake is something I highly recommend.

It feels like you’ve stepped into the pages of a storybook, and I couldn’t get enough. I kept stopping every five minutes for photos!

The entire loop is roughly 6 kilometres, and so you can easily add the Ojstrica Viewpoint to your walk around it. 

I did this trail entirely on foot in Lake Bled from my accommodation, the Grand Hotel Toplice, near the main Pletna station.

I walked clockwise around the lake to reach the starting point, but you can just as easily walk anticlockwise, as it’s a circular route.

It’s flat and paved the entire way with boardwalks and benches to relax on. 

I loved the picturesque views of Bled Island and the Blessed Virgin Mary Church on the way to the trail.

Eventually, you will see a post over the road with tiny green signs on it that mark the start of the trail to either Ojstrica or Mala/Velika Osojnica.

2. A mud trail through the forest

Once you see the trail marker, you will need to cross the road and enter the forest.

You’ll need to follow the (tiny and hard to spot) green signs, and you’ll see that they lead you to a dirt track heading upwards.

Depending on the season, this can be incredibly slippery, so watch your step. 

The path is uphill the entire way and is surprisingly steep with tree roots, protruding rocks and overgrowth. 

There will eventually be a fork in the road with three different directions for Ojstrica, Mala Osojnica and Velika Osojnica.

You’ll want to follow the path for Ojstrica. 

3. The rocky summit 

By far, the hardest part of the Ojstrica hike is at the very end, when you will be traversing a rocky plateau to the summit. 

It follows a steep, serpentine path through the trees until you reach the rocky part. 

At this point, you’ll find a climbing wire to help you. As the rocks are often slippery and uneven, make sure to hold on for balance. 

Eventually, you’ll reach the very top and find the Ojstrica viewpoint!

Finally reaching Ojstrica 

Although the hike to reach Ojstrica is difficult, the fairytale views up here are worth every minute of the climb.

I was utterly enchanted, and the panorama took my breath away. From here, you can see all over Lake Bled.

I loved taking in the views of Bled Island and Bled Castle under the peaks of the Karavanke mountains. 

It was also autumn during my visit, and I loved seeing the colourful blanket of trees in reds, oranges and yellows.

I’ve had this view on my bucket list for so long; it was honestly a dream come true.

It was a little busy up here in the late afternoon. But I hardly noticed as the views were that good. 

Once I appreciated the view and got my breath back, I explored the viewpoint, got some photos with my tripod and headed back down. 

Something that no one talks about, though, is how hard it is to walk around this viewpoint.

It’s essentially a group of large rocks, so it’s difficult to manoeuvre. Just take your time and be really careful. I almost fell so many times on this hike!

Is the Ojstrica hike difficult?

This is always subjective. But I found the Ojstrica hike quite difficult, yes. 

I was definitely out of breath with aching legs when I reached the top! But the magical views are well worth it. 

Although Ojstrica is only a twenty-minute walk from the start of the trail, it is still a hike that requires some effort.

If you have a reasonable level of fitness, you should be absolutely fine.

But, I would make sure that you’re wearing appropriate shoes for the hike (I wore trainers) and have walking poles with you if you use them.

How long does it take to reach Ojstrica viewpoint?

According to the signs on the lakeside, it should only take around twenty minutes from the start of the trail.

But this really depends on your speed, ability, the weather and trail quality.

I found it took me around 30-40 minutes from that point, as it was muddy and I took a few breather/photo breaks. 

You should also take into account the time it will take to walk around Lake Bled to reach the starting point of the hike. 

I started and ended my hike from the Grand Hotel Toplice on the lakeside and found it took me around two and a half hours altogether. 

That doesn’t include the time I spent appreciating the view at the top.

It took much longer than I anticipated, but I wasn’t too bothered. It is what it is, and the photo opportunities were worth every minute.

What is the best time to visit? 

Ojstrica gets very busy throughout the day as everyone wants those incredible postcard-worthy views of Lake Bled.

So, I would visit as early as you can in the morning or later in the afternoon to experience it without the crowds. 

Better yet, I would visit for sunrise or sunset. Just be careful hiking up or down here in the dark. There’s no lighting whatsoever.

I visited in the late afternoon, around 4 pm and found it was pretty busy. There were also people sitting all over the rocks.

But it was still manageable to get a good photo without people, as everyone is doing the same thing. You just need a little patience. 

Is Ojstrica viewpoint worth visiting?

Yes, if you only have time to visit one viewpoint in Lake Bled, let it be this one.

Not only is it the easiest of all three viewpoints, but it’s also free of charge and provides the most romantic views.

I particularly loved the fact that there wasn’t a fence blocking the scene here, so it was much better for taking photos with a person in them.

Although it does take effort to climb up, this enchanting panorama is worth every aching muscle!

My top tips for your hike

• Make sure to plan enough time for the hike. The signs say 20 minutes, but this won’t be the reality for many. 

• Wear appropriate shoes. I wore trainers, but boots or walking shoes would be better. No flip-flops or heels, please.

• The paths here are very steep and get extremely muddy when it has been raining. So, take your time and watch your step.

• You may need to be patient for photos during busy periods. It’s a small area that gets full quickly.

• Pack water and snacks – these will be desperately needed. 

Magical things to do around Lake Bled

There are lots of things to do in Lake Bled that make it worth visiting.

After your visit to Ojstrica, you can carry on for a further twenty minutes to visit the famous Mala Osojnica viewpoint.

Then, you can head down and walk around the lake to visit Bled Castle. It’s another climb, but the views from the top are stunning.

Or, if you want to refuel, I recommend heading to Hotel Bled to try some of the famous Bled Cream Cake.

This is where it was invented, and they have a great deal where you can get a slice of cake and dessert wine for around €8. 

No visit to Lake Bled would be complete without a boat ride over to Bled Island on a traditional Pletna.

You can then explore the island at your leisure. It’s worth going inside the Blessed Church of St Mary and ringing the famous wishing bell.
