Visiting Vintgar Gorge in Slovenia – Everything You Need To Know (2026)!

Vintgar Gorge in Slovenia is one of the most magical and spectacular places I have ever visited on my travels.

The entire trail felt like it had been plucked from the pages of a fairytale with dramatic cascades, vibrant water and autumn foliage.

I was utterly enchanted and couldn’t get enough. You simply must visit this place in your lifetime.

But, there are many not-so-nice things that you need to be prepared for, such as access, crowd levels and a pesky one-way system.

Here is a complete guide for visiting Vintgar Gorge with everything you need to know. 

What is Vintgar Gorge in Slovenia?

The Vintgar Gorge is a beautiful and dramatic canyon close to Lake Bled on the edge of Triglav National Park. 

It’s 1,600 metres long and 250 metres deep. The Radovna River snakes through it, creating a series of roaring cascades. 

The gorge itself is over 10,000 years old and was formed by melting glaciers in the last ice age.

For centuries, it remained a mystery until three local adventurers decided to explore and unveil its secrets.

Two years later, it opened to visitors in 1893 and is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Slovenia. 

At 55 hectares, it’s also the largest natural monument in the country. 

Opening times & prices 

It’s essential to note that Vintgar Gorge is not open all year round. Their season runs from April – October.

Opening hours vary each month, so it’s best to check before you visit.

It’s usually open from 7 am, 8 am or 9 am to 3.30 pm, 4.30 pm, 5.30 pm, or as late as 6.30 pm in summer. 

Ticket prices for Vintgar Gorge are €15 for an adult, €5 for a child (3-15 years) and €3 for pets. 

Booking tickets for Vintgar Gorge

It’s highly recommended that you book Vintgar Gorge tickets online in advance.

You can buy tickets on the day, but it’s never a guarantee that any will be available for the time you plan to go.

Booking a ticket before means securing your place and avoiding a long wait.

The one-way system

In the pandemic, Vintgar Gorge introduced a one-way system to help with social distancing.

They have now kept this system permanently due to the rising number of tourists to help with visitor flow. 

This means that you can only walk through the gorge on the boardwalks one way.

To return to your car or bus, you need to pick one of the thematic hiking trails (minimum 45 minutes). There is a fine of €50 if you don’t comply. 

I feel it’s important to mention this now, as it means your visit may be a lot longer than you originally anticipated. 

Also, if any of your party requires extra accessibility, you will need to organise a more suitable return in advance. 

How to access Vintgar Gorge

Due to the rise in tourist numbers, there have been significant changes made to the way visitors can access Vintgar Gorge.

It’s important to plan your journey here in advance, so you don’t miss your entry time slot.

1. By Car – Cars cannot park directly outside of Vintgar Gorge. You must park in the Vintgar Central Parking Area (P1) and get a shuttle bus.

2. By Bus – there is an e-shuttle from either the Bled Bus Station or the Bled Visitor Centre in central Bled. Click here for more details. 

3. On foot – If you’re feeling energetic, you can walk to Vintgar Gorge from Lake Bled. It’s 4 kilometres or two hours one way.

How long does it take to walk the Vintgar Gorge?

The time it takes to walk the main trail of the gorge (from entry barrier to exit barrier) is only around 45 minutes to one hour.

If it’s busy, or you want to take your time exploring/capturing it, this will take you a maximum of 90 minutes.

But, due to the one-way system, it will take you around 2-3 or even 4 hours to visit Vintgar Gorge on the day. 

This is because you have to walk back through one of their ‘Thematic Trails’ to get back to the shuttle buses/car park.

These trails take a minimum of 45 minutes to walk without stops.

The exit/return trails

It’s good to know that there is no shuttle bus back to the Vintgar Gorge visitor centre directly outside the exit barrier of the gorge.

This is because there is no road at the exit (you’ll be in the forest), and you can’t walk back on the boardwalks due to the one-way system.  

To get back to the Vintgar Visitor Centre & shuttle buses, you need to choose one of their thematic trails to loop around the gorge. These are;

• The River of Trees – 4.1 km or +2 hours without stops. 

• The King of Triglav –  1.6 km or +45 minutes without stops. 

There is an audio guide you can listen to along the way that’s included in your ticket. There’s even one for kids. 

Why not book a guided tour?

Due to all the complexities of visiting, the palaver of getting back to Bled and the fact I wasn’t driving.

I was so glad that I visited Vintgar Gorge as part of a guided tour of Triglav National Park from Lake Bled.

Our tour included a drop-off at the entrance, our tickets and a pick-up near the exit just outside the forest. This saved both time and money. 

After we left the gorge in the morning, we visited Lake Jasna, Lake Bohinj, Percinik and Savica waterfalls and a number of other gorgeous locations. 

It was such a great way to see the sights without a car, and our local guide was excellent. I highly recommend them. 

Arrival & Safety precautions 

However you decide to access the gorge, you will eventually reach the Vintgar Gorge visitor centre.

Inside, they have a small bistro where you can get some coffee and snacks or pick up some fun souvenirs to remember your visit.

You will need a barcode on your ticket to scan through the barrier when it’s your entry time. 

This time is very specific, and you can’t scan your barcode even a second earlier. 

If you happen to miss your entry time due to the added complications of getting here, speak to the staff.

They will try to get you in on the next available time slot. In summer, this may be a while.  

You’ll also be given a helmet, which you will need to wear through the gorge for safety. There is a €50 fine if you don’t wear it. Safety is sexy, after all. 

What you will see on the hike

The Vintgar Gorge is one of the most magical places I have ever visited on my travels.

Every step of this walk is breathtaking, and it really feels like you’re walking through the pages of a fairytale. 

In autumn, with all the colourful foliage, I couldn’t believe the beauty I was seeing. 

It almost didn’t feel real, like I had to pinch myself that I wasn’t dreaming. 

I can’t wait for you to experience this whimsical trail, too. Here is what to expect on the hike.

1. A dramatic gorge with cascades

The first part of the trail, as you enter the gorge, is simply dramatic.

You’ll stroll through a tall canyon with wooden boardwalks close to craggy, moss-covered walls.

This wooded trail is built beside a sapphire blue river with roaring cascades, where you’ll cross bridges over the Radovna River and back. 

2. Radovna River 

The Radovna River that snakes through this craggy pass had some of the bluest water I had ever seen in my life.

It’s mainly a vibrant turquoise but can appear emerald green in parts, depending on the light. 

It was so clear you could see all sorts of plants on the riverbed, and there are meant to be over 600 species of plantlife here.

If you look really closely, you may also see some trout swimming.

 

3. A fairytale forest

After you leave the boardwalk, you’ll then take a gravel path by the river towards the exit.

In autumn, the forest looked like an oil painting with all the yellow, orange and red trees.

4. Vintgar Dam & Bohinj Railway Bridge 

Eventually, you will walk down some steps towards the Vintgar Dam, which has its own dramatic cascade. 

I particularly loved walking under the Bohinj Railway Bridge, which was so charming.

This historic bridge is still in operation today, so you may get lucky (as I did) and see a train go by!

Leaving Vintgar gorge

Once you reach the end of the trial, you’ll exit the barrier and arrive at an adorable wood cabin.

In autumn, surrounded by colourful trees, this looked like something from a storybook. 

This cabin has another counter you can purchase drinks/snacks from and a small souvenir shop. 

There are a few seats that you can perch on to enjoy the views, and you can head to a viewpoint of Sum Waterfall, a few metres away. 

You will also see a fork in the road, and you can either walk the River of Trees trail or the King of Triglav trail back to the entrance.

I met my tour guide at the exit, and our group walked around 10 minutes back to our shuttle bus to head off to Triglav National Park. 

I was so grateful as the trails would have been pretty mucky in autumn with all the rainfall. 

When is the best time to visit Vintgar Gorge? 

The best time to visit Vintgar Gorge would be as early as you can in the morning on a weekday. 

At opening time, there are barely any visitors, and so it’s a far more magical experience.

This is especially important in summer (July/August) or on weekends when the crowd levels during the day can be overwhelming. 

Better yet, visit in shoulder season. I visited in autumn, and it was very quiet on my visit, even with my tour group.

The changing colours of the trees surrounding us made it even more enchanting! 

What you will need for the hike 

• A sensible pair of shoes  – The boardwalks are flat, but they can get slippery when wet. Also, you’ll be hiking in the forest with the one-way system trails to exit. 

• A layer or a raincoat – The gorge is shaded for most of the day, and it can get chilly, even in summer. If it rains, it’s largely exposed.

• Water & snacks – There are snack booths at the entrance and exit. But I would bring some with you just in case. Take rubbish with you.

• Your camera – You will want to capture these fairytale scenes. 

• Patience – If it is crowded, you’ll need to come armed with patience. 

Is Vintgar Gorge worth visiting?

Yes, this hike is utterly magical and was one of the main reasons why I planned a trip to Slovenia in the first place. 

It’s often voted as one of the most beautiful gorges in the entire world, and you have to experience it at least once in your lifetime. 

It probably sounds sad, but I got quite overwhelmed and emotional here.

I had been waiting to see this place for so long, and when I finally got here, it was everything I had hoped for, and more.

In autumn, it felt like walking through a fantasy world, and I didn’t want it to end. The pictures really don’t do this place justice.

Don’t skip Vintgar Gorge in Slovenia, it’s spectacular and worth the effort.

My top tips

• Visit as soon as they open – this is important to have a more peaceful experience. It will feel far more magical this way. 

• It’s a one-way system – You cannot go back the way you came, and there are fines if you disrupt the route. So, don’t rush.

• Plan your journey – the parking and shuttle bus systems can be a minefield to work out. Be prepared. You don’t want to be late.  

• Wear your helmet – Although I found this over the top, it is now a safety requirement. You may be fined if you don’t comply. 

More magical things to do in Lake Bled

I went to Vintgar Gorge as part of a wider day trip around Triglav National Park.

On our visit, we went to many locations, including Lake Bohinj, Percinik waterfall and Savica waterfall.

If you can, I recommend seeing as much of this park as possible. You can either drive or use public transport.

There are lots of things to do in Lake Bled that make it worth visiting.

I recommend walking around Lake Bled if you haven’t already. You can head up to the Ojstrica Viewpoint for fairytale views.

Bled Castle is also worth your time, as the views from the top are stunning.

If you want to refuel after your hike, I recommend heading to the Bled Hotel to try some of the famous Bled Cream Cake.

This is where it was invented, and they have a great deal where you can get a slice of cake and sweet wine for around €8. 

No visit to Lake Bled would be complete without a boat ride over to Bled Island on a traditional Pletna.

You can then explore the island by visiting the Blessed Church of St Mary and ringing the famous wishing bell.
