Pikachu Sweets Café – A Must-Visit for Pokémon Fans in Tokyo, Japan!

If you’re a Pokémon fan visiting Japan, then you must visit the Pikachu Sweets Café.

It’s a takeaway shop that sells all sorts of Poké treats such as Pikachu waffles or ‘Poké-ffles’, soda floats, ice cream and Polteageist tea.

You’ll dine on shared Poké Ball tables and get to take photos with some familiar mascots. It’s every fan’s dream come true. 

The great thing is, unlike the Pokémon Café, you don’t need a reservation to go! Just turn up and queue on the day. 

Here is a complete guide to the Pikachu Sweets Café and why it’s a must for Poké fans in Tokyo, Japan. 

What is the Pikachu Sweets Café?

Pokémon is a Japanese game franchise and worldwide phenomenon that has captured the hearts of millions of children and adults alike.

It features a collection of fantasy Pocket Monsters that has grown in size from 151 original creatures to over 1000 with the latest Gen IX. 

Since its creation in 1996, it’s only grown in popularity and has adapted for every new generation of fans.

The franchise features card games, Nintendo Gameboy games, an animated series, the Pokémon Go app and a highly anticipated theme park. 

Due to all this ‘Pokémania’, it makes sense that Japan has its own Pokémon Café where you can dine with your favourite characters. 

Due to its popularity, the Pikachu Sweets Café is an added venture where you can take away Pokémon-themed treats.

It serves up cute drinks, waffles, biscuits and ice cream that are the perfect snacks for enthusiasts.

Do you need a reservation to go? 

No, the great thing about the Pikachu Sweets Café is that you don’t need a reservation to visit.

It’s mainly a takeaway shop, meaning you can turn up and walk in on the day. 

This makes it a great option for those fans who didn’t get a Pokémon Café reservation. 

Or, for those fans who just can’t get enough of eating cute and kawaii Pokémon food. 

Where is the Pikachu Sweets Café located?

You’ll find the Pikachu Sweets Café in Sunshine City Mall in Ikebukuro. This was my favourite place to eat and shop in Tokyo. 

It’s a huge shopping centre that’s filled with themed character shops and cafés. 

There’s also the largest Gashapon Hall in Japan on the 6th floor in the Bandai-Namco Cross Store. 

The nearest metro stop is Higashi-Ikebukuro Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line.

It can be a bit of a minefield trying to find the café as it’s such a big place, but head to the Second Floor (2F) Alpha. 

You’ll find it near the Pokémon Center MEGA. It’s also near Kiddy Land/Snoopy Town/Rilakkuma store and the One Piece store.

Arriving at the Pikachu Sweets Café

I almost squealed when I finally saw the Pikachu Sweets Café in the distance. It was so pink and pretty!

You’ll know when you’ve arrived, as you’ll see logos and plushies of Chef Pikachu in both pink and green everywhere. 

It’s also nice and open plan, so you can see all the cute artwork and mascots inside. 

What is it like inside? 

The Pikachu Sweets Café is floor-to-ceiling kawaii (cute) with all the pink counters and displays.

You’ll find Chef Pikachu and sweets artwork everywhere, which make for incredible photo opportunities.

The Pikachu Sweets Chef Pikachu mascot statue can be found at the back of the shop.

There are also two Poké Ball-shaped tables in the middle where you can stand and eat your treats.  

As a millennial and life-long fan since the original 151, the entire place was like a childhood dream come true for me. I was in my element. 

What is on the Pikachu Sweets menu?

Every item on the Pikachu Sweets menu is Pokémon-themed and almost too cute to consume.

They have a huge selection of frappes, soda floats and lattes where you can get Pikachu foam art. 

They also serve up colourful and tasty Poke-ffles, Baumkuchen biscuits, Poké-donuts and ice cream. 

Or, you can order a Polteageist apple tea that comes with its very own tea pot ceremony. 

To order your Poké treats, you simply join the queue and then order from the kind staff at the counter when it’s your turn. 

Pikachu Waffles or ‘Poke-ffle’

The thing that drew me to the Pikachu Sweets Café in the first place was their Pikachu Waffles or ‘Poke-ffles’.

These are Pikachu-shaped with pointy ears topped with yellow and chocolate icing. It comes served in a Pikachu Sweets packet. 

It was actually delicious and not overly sweet. I think the flavour was meant to be caramel, but it didn’t taste like that to me.

Polteageist Tea

Another thing I was really looking forward to at the Pikachu Sweets Café was the Polteageist Aromatherapy.

If you order any of the Polteageist drinks, it comes served with a ghost tea party ceremony.

When you go to pick up your tea at the counter, you’ll find a Polteageist teapot. 

A friendly server will show you that the pot is empty because Polteageist is not ready. 

But when you tip the teapot handle, your tea will then pour out!

It was such a fun and interactive way to receive my tea, and it made my visit feel extra special.

Pokémon frappes & coffee art 

Another fun thing that I ordered at the Pikachu Sweets Café was a latte with Pikachu foam art on top.

You can choose from one of five designs to decorate your latte, and it comes served in the cutest Poké Ball cup.

I found all the treats I ordered at the café affordable, very tasty and not overly sweet. I would happily go back to try more!

Garbodor Trash Can

Anyone who has been to Japan knows how frustrating it can be that there is a lack of trash cans. 

It can sometimes mean holding on to your coffee cup for hours on end until you can dispose of it. 

But that’s not a problem here in the Pikachu Sweets Café, as they have their very own Garbodor Trash Can!

Isn’t he just adorable? I think he deserves a little moment of appreciation here.

Exclusive Pikachu Sweets Café merchandise  

Just like the Pokémon Café, the Pikachu Sweets Café offers its own collection of exclusive merchandise.

You can buy these super cute plush cup holders of Chef Pikachu in either pink or green.

They also have mascot plushies and plush keychains that will hang perfectly on your handbag or backpack.

You can buy some of their exclusive straws that come with a variety of straw charms.  

They also have reusable shopping bags, Polteageist’s Tea Pot or Sinistea’s Tea Cup. 

As you can only find them in this store, I would pick them up while you can! 

Shared Poké Ball tables

Although the Pikachu Sweets Café is a takeaway shop, they do have some shared tables in the middle of the café to eat. 

These are adorably shaped like Poké Balls and have a plushie Pikachu display in the middle. 

It makes a great place to take a photo of your cute Pokémon treats. 

These tables cannot be reserved and are on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Despite it being a weekend during my visit, there was still a lot of room. So, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding space.

People tend to have a quick bite here after visiting the Pokémon Center MEGA, then be on their way.  

Is the Pikachu Sweets Café worth visiting?

100% YES, the Pikachu Sweets Café is a must-visit for Pokémon fans in Tokyo. 

It’s pink, Pikachu-themed and serves up all sorts of tasty and adorable Pokémon treats. What more could a fan ask for? 

The fact that you don’t need a reservation takes the stress out of visiting, and a Pokémon Center nearby is the cherry on top!

Don’t skip the Pikachu Sweets Café in Tokyo, it’s an enchanting dream come true for Poké fans!

Don’t forget to visit Pokémon Center MEGA

If you’re a Pokémon fan, then you can’t miss visiting the chain of Pokémon Centers in Japan. 

Although they all sell similar merchandise, it is worth visiting a few as each one has its own theme and special editions.  

Just next door to the Pikachu Sweets Café, you’ll find the Pokémon Center MEGA. 

This is the largest official Pokémon shop in all of Japan. So, you have to go.

Inside, you can find lots of Poké merchandise and photo opportunities. But, be prepared to queue for it as it’s a popular shop. 

Even more Pokémon in Sunshine City Mall

Sunshine City Mall in Ikebukuro is a haven for Pokémon fans, and a must-visit in my opinion. 

Beyond the Pikachu Sweets Café and Pokémon Center MEGA, they have many Pokémon displays throughout the mall to find.

Just outside of the café, you can find some cute statues of Eevee, Pikachu and the original trio of original of Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle.

Sunshine City is also home to the Pokémon GO Labs, and there is even a Pokémon Card Station to meet other enthusiasts. 

Why not visit the Pokémon Café?

If you love Pokémon, you also cannot leave Japan without visiting a Pokémon Café.

Here, you can dine on Pokémon-themed food, buy exclusive merchandise and even watch Pikachu dancing!

There are two locations in Tokyo and Osaka, and both are very popular.
