Vampire Café Tokyo – Is This Gothic Fang-tasy Restaurant Worth Visiting?

If you’re looking for a spooktacular experience in Japan, then look no further than the Vampire Café Tokyo. 

It makes for a devilishly delightful night filled with chilling cocktails and blood-themed dishes you can sink your teeth into.

On the last evening of my trip, my Spooky friend Jess and I decided to say farewell with a bite to eat in this fang-tastic lair.

Here is a complete guide to Tokyo’s Vampire Café and whether it’s worth visiting. 

What is the Vampire Café in Tokyo?

The Vampire Café is a Gothic-themed eatery that promises an unforgettable spooky evening. 

It’s one of the oldest themed cafés in Tokyo, which opened at the turn of the century. 

You’ll join the Earl of Rose in the Grand Hall of Dracula’s Castle, where you can enjoy libations and a bloody feast in clandestine ritual chambers. 

It’s owned by DD Holdings, a hospitality chain with several famous themed establishments, including the whimsy Alice in Wonderland cafés. 

Do you need to make a reservation?

Yes, you must make a reservation to dine in Vampire Café Tokyo. They can sometimes take walk-ins, but this is rare. 

This Gothic restaurant is an intimate setting with a limited number of private booths, so it quickly fills up. 

This is especially important during Halloween season when tables are in high demand.

I recommend making a reservation around a week in advance via their official channels to avoid disappointment.

Where is the Vampire Café in Tokyo? 

Vampire Café Tokyo is located in the upscale neighbourhood of Ginza in the heart of the capital.

The easiest way to travel around Tokyo is by using the subway. I recommend downloading a Suica Card to your phone to pay for public transport.

The closest metro station is Higashi-ginza Station on the Asakusa Line or Hibiya Station on the Mita Line. It’s then just 10 minutes walk away.

I will warn you that these train stations are like a labyrinth, and it’s easy to get lost finding the right underground exit. So, leave in plenty of time.

The Gothic restaurant is located in a multi-business complex called La Paix Building, and you’ll need to take the elevator to the 7th floor. 

Living Blood Corridor 

Once you arrive on the 7th floor, you’ll be transported to the Count’s Lair. Make sure to announce your arrival by ringing their brass bell. 

This will summon one of their undead hosts dressed in Victorian garb who will greet you and usher you inside Dracula’s Castle.

You’ll travel through the Living Blood Corridor, which is like entering a portal that transports you back in time, with red blood cells appearing into view.

Finally, you’ll arrive at the Grand Hall where the Earl of Rose will bid you welcome as his honoured guests for the evening. 

Inside Tokyo’s Vampire Café

The Vampire Café is a seriously Gothic affair with crimson velvet curtains, candelabras, black veil drapes and a bat-wing chandelier. 

In the middle, you’ll find a large coffin showcased for slumber, topped with oodles of melted wax candles and skulls. 

Around the casket are several clandestine ritual chambers with secreted tables for an intimate setting. 

You won’t see any of the other guests while you dine, so it adds to the mystery. 

I was so happy when we were seated in the Altar of St George. This is a private booth on a raised dais with a prime central view of the coffin.

Our table had plates, cutlery, and chopsticks already waiting for us, illuminated by blood-spattered candles. 

What’s on the coffin menu?

You’ll first be given a coffin-shaped booklet filled with a variety of chilling cocktail potions to order. 

Then, you can browse their grimoire of a Grand Menu if you’re ordering á la carte. 

Every enticing meal at the vampire café has been designed with a ghoulishly gratifying twist. 

The Italian-inspired dishes have monikers like ‘Feed for Monsters’, ‘Rose Flower That Bloomed in Death’ and ‘Coffin Where Vampires Sleep’.

Bloody Cocktails

The Vampire Café Tokyo offers a range of blood-themed cocktails. There are plenty of alcoholic or non-alcoholic potions.

All of them come presented with a bloody flair. You can select signature drinks like The Bloody Rose, Transylvania, Iron Maiden, or Bella Lugosi.

I ordered the Nosferatu, and this came with a glowing iced cube and blood dripping over the rim of the glass. 

Nefarious Beginnings

As it was December, we pre-booked their Christmas menu, a festive banquet fit for blood-suckers.

The Christmas Dinner Party at Dracula’s Castle menu included six spooky courses.

We started our delectable journey with garlic mini pizzas made into stockings. 

Then, we received an Invitation to the Dinner Party from the Earl, which was a set of black bread letters sealed with red rose petals. 

After, we were treated to a homemade green salad called Forest of the Dead Where Bats Roam.

This was a bed of lettuce topped with cherry tomatoes and a wafer of a winged bat with Blood Xmas sprinkled on.

A Bloody Banquet ignited by incantation

One of my favourite dishes at the Vampire Café was Wicked Reindeer’s Prize.

This was a mushroom carbonara pasta plate topped with a horned deer wafer on top. 

When it was served, the count came to our table and poured ‘blood’ (tomato sauce) on top while reciting unearthly incantations! 

It made for a haunting spectacle which left us totally speechless. But nothing could have prepared me for the next dish.

Their famous Rebel Tragically Sentenced to be Burned at the Stake course is so renowned that it has featured on Japanese TV. 

It was a roasted chicken topped with a skull-shaped wafer that was set alight before our eyes. 

A Bittersweet Ending 

The bloody banquet came to a frightening culinary conclusion with a sweet dish called Burning, Decaying, and Collapsing Sweet Coffin.

This was a soft sponge vanilla cake served with cream and strawberries, topped with winter berries, edible silver beads, and rose buds. 

I was so full by this point I could hardly finish my slice, but it was the best way to end our feast in Dracula’s Castle. 

Is Tokyo’s Vampire Café expensive?

Affordability is always subjective, but I found the Vampire Café’s set menus value for money. 

We paid ¥6,000 per person (£27) for our six-course Christmas vampire banquet plus a few cocktails, which I thought was very reasonable. 

The quality and creativity of the dishes were spectacular, and the haunted castle setting was sublime. 

As someone obsessed with vampires, it was a night I’ll never forget. I thought that this fang-tasy dinner was worth every penny.

Is the Vampire Café Tokyo worth visiting? 

Yes, the Vampire Café Tokyo was one of my favourite dining experiences, and a place I would cross oceans of time to return to.  

As two Spooky girls obsessed with vampires, this Gothic restaurant was a dream come true.

It was the best way to say farewell and end my once-in-a-lifetime trip to Japan.

The haunted setting, bloody cocktails and devilishly delectable food made an eternal impression.
