20+ Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Filming Locations You Can Visit (2026)!

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, then you must make a pilgrimage to Dubrovnik in Croatia.

You’ll recognise this ancient walled city on the Dalmatian Coast as King’s Landing in the show.

Many of its towering fortresses, pebbled beaches and historic streets brought the chaotic capital of Westeros to life on our screens. 

This epic 8-part series had me in a chokehold when it was first released. 

So, I was in my element following in the footsteps of my favourite characters and reliving the most pivotal moments. 

Here are all the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones filming locations you can visit. 

Was Game of Thrones filmed in Dubrovnik?

Yes, Dubrovnik featured extensively in Game of Thrones from series two onwards.

It mainly featured throughout the show as King’s Landing in Westeros. 

This is the capital of the Seven Kingdoms and home of the legendary Red Keep, where the Lannisters plot and play.

Some of the most important scenes of the show were filmed here, like The Purple Wedding and Cersei’s Walk of Shame. 

Don’t forget to buy a Dubrovnik Pass

Many of these Dubrovnik Game of Thrones filming locations are completely free to visit in the Old Town.

But, if you want to visit the City Walls, Lovrijenac Fort, or the Rector’s Palace, I recommend purchasing a Dubrovnik Pass.

The City Walls cost €40 in the summer season (March – November), and a pass costs €40 for 1 day with free entry for the walls and museums.

I bought a 3-day pass for €50, and this saved me a small fortune as I visited almost all of the museums included during my visit. 

Plus, the pass grants you unlimited free bus travel around the city. This was a lifesaver as I wasn’t driving and stayed outside of the Old Town.

It really is a no-brainer. So, make sure you purchase your pass online before you visit.

Why not book a guided tour?

Although I usually love to visit places myself, the best way to experience Game of Thrones filming locations in Dubrovnik is a walking tour.

You’ll be shown around the city by a local guide who will show you the places with ease and let you in on some behind-the-scenes secrets!

I booked a tour that included the Karaka, a historic ship that was used as Daenerys Targaryen’s ship in the show. 

We sailed into King’s Landing, did a Game of Thrones walking tour and even got to take a photo on the Iron Throne!

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones locations

Most of the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones locations can be found in the Old Town. So, it’s easy enough to visit these in one day.

But some of these locations can be found just outside of the city or on nearby islands. 

So, I recommend having at least 2-3 days in Dubrovnik to experience it all if you’re a die-hard fan. 

Here are all the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones filming locations you can visit. 

1. Jesuit Stairs / Cersei’s Walk of Shame

One of the most iconic locations you’ll find in Dubrovnik is the Jesuit Stairs. 

These historic steps feature in series 5, episode 10, “Mother’s Mercy”, during Cersei’s walk of shame. 

This comes after she confessed to incest to Ser Lancel and the Faith of the Seven.

Cersei’s hair is shorn, and she is made to walk naked from the Sept of Bailor to the Red Keep with Septa Unella chanting “shame” and ringing a bell.

Every fan will remember it. It was the sweetest revenge seeing her humiliating punishment of walking naked through King’s Landing!

You can visit where they filmed this unforgettable moment, but don’t expect to be the only one. It’s usually packed all day. 

I recommend visiting as soon as the sun rises to experience it without the mass crowds. 

2. Pile Gate / People’s Riot

Ah, Joffrey. The Lannister king we love to hate. There were so many bad decisions made by this boy that still make my blood boil now.

The people of King’s Landing also hated their ruler after he cut off their food supplies in series 2, episode 6, “The Old Gods And The New”. 

A riot breaks out when Joffrey is making his way through the city in his royal procession after seeing off Princess Myrcella. 

His personal guard is overwhelmed, and he barely makes it out alive, calling for executions (shame). 

You’ll find these scenes take place in Pile Gate, one of the ancient gateways to the Old Town, built in 1537.

This is also where Jaime returns to King’s Landing during series 3. 

3. Lovrijenac Fort / Red Keep 

Lovrijenac Fort is a detached fortress in Pile that is 37 metres high and perched on a promontory of rock. 

Its origins date back to the 11th century as a defence for the walled city and is named after St Lawrence. 

This fortress also featured in Game of Thrones as the infamous Red Keep. 

Many scenes were filmed inside the fortress, such as the tourney on King Joffrey’s name day and Cersei’s “power is power” scene with Littlefinger.

This also appears again in series 3 when the newly knighted Ser Bronn of the Blackwater reminds Tyrion about his pay as a sellsword. 

You can admire this place from the outside, and there is a small terrace at the entrance to see views over King’s Landing.

But I loved exploring inside this fortress, and the views were outstanding from the top. 

You do have to buy a ticket to go in, but entry is free with a Dubrovnik Pass. 

4. Pile Bay / Blackwater Bay 

You’ll see Pile Bay, aka Blackwater Bay, on the walk to Lovrijenac Fort and from the fortress itself.

This was the pebble beach where the Lannisters gathered to see Myrcela off to Dorne in series 2, episode 6, “The Old Gods and the New”.

This is the same beach where Cersei greets Jaime, who brings her back from Sunspear in series 6. 

5. Dubrovnik West Pier / Blackwater Bay 

Next to Pile Bay, you’ll find a stone jetty called Dubrovnik West Pier.

This pier featured in series 3, episode 1, “Valar Dohaeris”, when Sansa and her maid Shae are playing a guessing game. 

Littlefinger approaches and discusses plans for her escape from King’s Landing. 

6. Dubrovnik West Harbour / King’s Sons Hunt

Another Dubrovnik Game of Thrones filming location found here are the cliff steps leading to two green doors in the rock.

We see these doors during series 2, episode 1, “The North Remembers”.

If you cast your mind back, the Gold Cloaks are ordered to kill any of King Robert Baratheon’s illegitimate sons to eliminate their claim to the throne. 

So, they can be seen following orders by raiding these homes. Thankfully, Gendry manages to escape from his smithy in Flea Bottom.

7. Minčeta Tower / House of the Undying 

Minčeta Tower is where they filmed the outside of the House of the Undying in Qarth during season 2, episode 10 “Valar Morghulis”.

Daenerys is trying to locate her stolen dragons with Ser Jorah Mormont, and the trail leads to this mysterious warlock keep with no door. 

You can only visit Minčeta tower as part of the Dubrovnik City Walls, and entry is free with a Dubrovnik Pass.

8. Bokar Fortress / Tyrion & Varys Speak

Another filming location to look forward to during a visit to the Dubrovnik City Walls is Bokar Fortress.

Many strategic conversations take place here during Game of Thrones.

Most notably, we see Tyrion and Lord Varys discussing war during series 2, episode 8, “The Prince of Winterfell”.

Cersei and Jaime can later be seen standing at this fortress overlooking the Iron Fleet in series 7, episode 1, “Dragonstone”. 

You can see views of this fortress for free, but if you want to stand here, you need a ticket for the city walls or your Dubrovnik Pass.

9. Ethnographic Museum Rupe / Littlefinger’s Brothel

The shady tunnels and alleyways around the Ethnographic Museum Rupe were used for the entrance to Littlefinger’s Brothel.

We see this street in series 4, episode 1, “Two Swords”, when Tyrion asks to speak with Oberyn Martell. 

Also, we later see this tunnel when Lancel Lannister makes the High Septon walk naked through the streets of King’s Landing in series 5. 

Despite this being hidden away, it’s usually packed with people all day. So, visit early if you want photos. 

Although they didn’t film anything inside, the museum is still worth visiting. Entry is free with your Dubrovnik Pass. 

10. Rector’s Palace / Qarth

During series 2, Daenerys visits the trading city of Qarth in Essos, where she is given sanctuary. 

During her time here, she visits the Spice King in his palace about acquiring ships to cross the Narrow Sea. 

This Dubrovnik Game of Thrones filming location can be found in the Rector’s Palace courtyard. 

According to interviews, they filmed here for weeks. But the palace only appeared on screen for less than 3 minutes.

Beyond the fandom, visiting this museum is a must. Even the outside looks like you’re part of the show. 

This gorgeous gallery is filled with all sorts of interesting exhibitions of historical importance and art. Entry is included with a Dubrovnik Pass. 

11. Dominican Monastery / Lannister Protest

As you make your way towards Ploče Gate, you’ll encounter Dominic’s Street. This was named after the Dominican Monastery. 

The staircase here features in series 2, episode 5, “The Ghost of Harrenhal”,  when Bronn and Tyrion walk through King’s Landing.

They pass a dissenter who is loudly protesting about the tyranny of King Joffrey to a crowd gathered.

Unfortunately, on my visit, they were carrying out important reconstruction work. But you’ll recognise the steps all the same. 

You also get a great view of them from above during your walk on the city walls. 

12. Ploče Gate / Red Keep entrance 

Ploče Gate features many times throughout Game of Thrones, but most notably during series 5, episode 10 “Mother’s Mercy”.

After she walks down the Jesuit Stairs, she continues through the streets of King’s Landing to the entrance of the Red Keep inside Ploče Gate. 

We also see this gate very briefly when Tyrion speaks with Lancel Lannister guarded by Bronn in series 2, episode 5 “The Ghost of Harrenhal”.

Again, this is one of the mighty defence gates that would protect the walled city years ago and was built in the 14th century.

Walking through here is like a portal back in time, and you get beautiful views of the East City Harbour. 

13. Walls of Dubrovnik / Pratice Yard

As well as the towers on the city walls, there were other scenes filmed on them for Game of Thrones. 

They used a grassy area of the West City Walls for the Practice Yard in King’s Landing. 

You’ll see this place when Ser Gregor Clegane swings his sword to execute prisoners, and Cersei asks him to be her champion. 

Cersei later walks here with King Tommen, and he discusses her return to Casterly Rock. 

Also, you’ll see this practice yard when the Faith Militant and his Sparrows arrest Loras Tyrell during series 5.

14. Karaka Ship / Daenerys’ Ship 

One of the best Dubrovnik Game of Thrones experiences has to be a cruise on the Karaka Ship.

It’s a replica of a 16th-century merchant ship that they used in the series to film Daenerys sailing the Narrow Sea.

I booked a joint Karaka Ship and Game of Thrones walking tour during my visit, and I loved it.

We boarded the ship in Gruz Harbour and were given Dragon’s Blood cocktails on arrival.

We then sailed into King’s Landing with breathtaking views of the coast whilst hearing behind-the-scenes commentary of the filming. 

Our tour finished with a guided walking tour of Old Town, where we visited many Dubrovnik Game of Thrones filming locations.

We even got to visit the gift shop and take a photo on the Iron Throne. It was one of my favourite memories, you must book if you’re a fan.

15. Lokrum Island / Qarth

Another location where they filmed parts of the Spice King’s palace in Qarth was on Lokrum Island.

The cloisters of the Benedictine Monastery of St Mary formed part of the palace gardens where Daenerys discusses her acquisition of ships. 

Beyond visiting for Game of Thrones, Lokrum Island is a popular day trip from Dubrovnik. 

The cruise only takes 15 minutes, and then you’re free to explore all the attractions this historic island has to offer.

Highlights include a hike to Fort Royal, a botanical garden, swimming in a dead sea, admiring peacocks and dining in al fresco restaurants.

Tickets for Lokrum Island cost €30 per person, but your ticket includes the ferry and entry to all attractions, including the monastery.

The money is really a donation that helps towards island conservation. 

I caught the first ferry of the day to avoid the bigger crowds and the heat. I loved my visit here as there was so much to do.

It was so lush, and the panoramic views over the Adriatic were breathtaking.

16. Sit on the Iron Throne 

One of my favourite parts about visiting Lokrum Island was the Game of Thrones exhibition in the Lokrum Visitor Centre.

Inside, there are notice boards with plenty of behind-the-scenes secrets, interviews and even documentaries playing. 

The best part is that they have an Iron Throne that you can sit on for photos. 

This was used in the show during filming and was a gift given to the city of Dubrovnik by HBO after they finished filming.

17. Gradac Park / Purple Wedding

Gradac Park in Dubrovnik was used to film Joffrey’s wedding celebrations in series 4, episode 2, “The Lion and the Rose”. 

It’s nicknamed The Purple Wedding after Joffrey dies in a rather horrific fashion from drinking poison. 

You’ll find the park outside of the city walls, beyond Lovrijenac Fort on the west side. 

Although you won’t find any of the banquet left behind, you will recognise the circular stone fountain. 

Unfortunately, this area was closed off during my visit for reconstruction. Hopefully, it will be open when you go. 

18. Trsteno Arboretum / King’s Landing Gardens

My favourite Dubrovnik Game of Thrones filming location has to be Trsteno Arboretum. 

This stunning garden on the shore of the Adriatic featured as the Red Keep Gardens in the show. 

Sansa strolls through here with Loras Tyrell to meet Margaery and Lady Glenna Tyrell. She then confesses to them that Joffrey is a monster. 

Also, Lord Varys meets with Lady Glenna, warning her about Littlefinger. 

Sansa and Margaery discuss Sansa’s engagement to Tyrion, and the unhappy couple take a stroll through the gardens in series 3. 

This is also the location where Lord Varys tries to convince Shae to leave King’s Landing for her safety. 

This oasis of an arboretum is approximately 20 kilometres from Dubrovnik Old Town and will take around 25 minutes to drive there. 

But if you’re visiting without a car, you can easily take a bus or taxi to Trsteno. Remember, public transport is included in a Dubrovnik Pass. 

19. Hotel Belvedere / Oberyn vs. The Mountain 

Hotel Belvedere is an abandoned luxury hotel on Dubrovnik’s shoreline.

Its large terrace was completely transformed into an amphitheatre for Game of Thrones.

This is where they filmed the famous fight between Oberyn Martell and The Mountain during series 4, episode 8, “The Mountain and the Viper”.

Honestly, I think this was one of the saddest episodes for me, and the result threw me for a loop. R.I.P.

Although it is abandoned, and you can’t go inside for safety reasons, you can still see the exteriors from the coast road. 

20. Game of Thrones Gift Shop

So, this is a little naughty as it’s not a filming location (obviously). But if you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you have to visit this Old Town gift shop. 

You’ll instantly spot Tyrion in the window, sipping a glass of wine and inviting you to enter.

The shop has a plethora of Game of Thrones souvenirs like t-shirts, mugs, and magnets that you can purchase.

But one of the best parts of visiting is the Iron Throne that you can sit on at the back of the shop. 

I got to sit on this as part of my Game of Thrones walking tour. But you can also do it if you purchase something from the shop. 

There are even a few props to pose with. It’s a great way to remember your visit to King’s Landing. 

Where to stay in Dubrovnik

It’s best to stay a few nights in the city to visit these Dubrovnik Game of Thrones filming locations, as there are so many.

I recommend staying inside the Old Town or just outside. Here are my recommendations:

• Hotel Imperial Dubrovnik (where most of the cast stayed)

• The Pucić Palace Hotel (a 17th-century living museum)

• Seven Stars Accommodation (Game of Thrones inspired)

• Boutique Hotel Porto (where I stayed & loved it)
