Hey Potterheads, did you know that there is a Harry Potter Café in Tokyo?

It’s located in Akasaka, and it will transport you straight to the Wizarding World.

You can sip on potion cocktails and order a feast worthy of Hogwarts’ Great Hall.

As a huge Harry Potter fan and member of the Slytherin house, I had the most magical time here.

Here is an honest review of the Tokyo Harry Potter Café and whether it’s worth visiting.

What is the Tokyo Harry Potter Café?

Japan is obsessed with Harry Potter, and they have an entire Wizarding World Street to explore in Akasaka.

The Harry Potter Café is the main attraction, and it’s the perfect place for Potterheads to dine.

This table service restaurant welcomes witches and wizards of all houses and offers a magical menu of food and cocktails.

As you can imagine, it’s a very popular themed café in Japan. So, booking ahead is essential.

Do you need to reserve a table?

I highly recommend getting a Harry Potter Café reservation before you visit.

They don’t normally accept walk-ins; you will need to ask the host for the next available time slot, and this is normally a long wait.

Fortunately, booking this restaurant is so much easier than booking the Kirby Café and Pokémon Café.

They open reservations a few weeks before, and I had no issues getting mine a couple of days before my visit.

They will need your credit card details to book with a ¥500 deposit. If you don’t show up or cancel on the same day, you will still be charged this.

Inside the Harry Potter Café in Tokyo

The interiors of this magical café honestly took my breath away. It was out of this world.

It’s painted in a gorgeous deep teal with a scattering of gold stars on the walls.

You’ll also find a hodgepodge of portraits, picture frames, candles, a giant wand and astronomical equipment.

I also loved the lamps on the ceiling that give off a floating candle vibe.

It really feels like you’ve entered a portal to the Wizarding World, and I was so excited to dine here.

What’s on the Harry Potter Café menu?

Beyond the celestial decor, the café has a spellbinding menu of treats.

Their signature dishes are their Hogwarts House toasties of Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw.

These hot sandwiches, slathered in cheese, are served on house colour plates and even have a Hogwarts crest burned into the bread on top!

They have British favourites like their Hogwarts Sunday Roast, Hogwarts Sausage and Mashed Potatoes and Black Lake Fish & Chips.

Or, if you’re really hungry, you can sink your fangs into their Dragon’s Breath Spare Ribs.

Their desserts are also really creative. There’s an Eton Mess Goblet, Aragog’s Lair (chocolate cake) and the famous Hedwig Cake.

Expecto Patronum Cocktail

The Harry Potter Café also offers a huge menu of non-alcoholic potions that you can try.

I decided to order their viral Expecto Patronum Cocktail, which is a bright blue drink presented with a smoke bubble on top!

Make sure to get all your photos of this quickly after it arrives, as it pops easily.

I have to admit, this mocktail had incredible presentation, but the taste was just okay. It was too sweet, and the amount of sugar masked any flavour.

You can also order other cocktails such as Wingdardium Leviosa (apple) and Stupefy (orange).

With every drink order, you receive a free Hogwarts coaster to take home.

Platform 9 and 3/4 Beans

I visited this café in the morning, so I decided to order brunch.

As a Brit, I was excited to see that they had a Full English Breakfast option called Platform 9 and 3/4 Beans.

This was served with a hint of magic where the waiter revealed the dish out of a smoke-filled cloche.

On the plate were mushrooms, grilled tomato, bacon, sausage, potato wedges and a large helping of baked beans.

The best part was the Platform 9 and 3/4 bread bun on the side. It was so cute and helped mop up the bean sauce.

It was listed under side dishes on the menu, but it was definitely a full meal. The perfect size for breakfast anyway.

What’s the food like?

After hearing horror stories about the food at the Harry Potter Café in Tokyo, I didn’t set my expectations too high.

As someone who visits theme cafés often, I already knew I wasn’t visiting for the quality of the food. I was paying for the overall experience.

But I actually loved my Platform 9 and 3/4 Beans dish; it was tasty and reminded me of home.

The portion was on the small side. However, the presentation was great, and the beans were delicious.

Was it the best food I ate in Tokyo? No. Would I go back and eat it again? Yes.

A magical shop

Before you leave the Harry Potter Café, make sure to visit their magical shop in the corner.

Here, you can buy Hogwarts House plates, cutlery, coasters, keyrings and trinkets.

They make great souvenirs to remember your visit and will add a bit of whimsy to your home.

The decor will transport you to the Wizarding World, and you’ll feel like you’re dining at Hogwarts with the spellbinding menu.

Not to mention, the entire area around Akasaka Station is a dream come true with all the Potter places to visit.

So, book your table, hop on your broom and fly over to Tokyo to experience the magic.

Where is the Harry Potter Café in Tokyo?

Tokyo’s Harry Potter Café is located in Akasaka in the ‘Wizarding World Street’.

The nearest metro station is Akasaka, which is a paradise for Potterheads.

You’ll find a portrait gallery straight from Hogwarts Castle at the station, along with a time turner statue.

You’ll see the café building as soon as you exit the station. Look out for the Hogwarts House banners, Hedwig and a Ford Anglia!

The entrance is inside the Akasaka Biz Tower on the first floor. This is a Potter-themed plaza with magical hidden gems to find.

Opening times

The Harry Potter Café is typically open from 10 am – 10 pm every day (with a last entry at 9 pm).

They serve brunch from 10 am – 5 pm, and then it switches to dinner service from 5 pm until closing.

I recommend visiting as early as you can if you want a more peaceful experience.

My top tips for visiting

  • I highly recommend getting a reservation so you don’t have to wait or miss out.
  • Your reservation will also mean you get a lot longer to eat inside the café. This is usually 80-100 minutes or so.
  • There aren’t many vegetarian options. There’s a spicy greenhouse salad, cocktails and desserts.

Harry Potter Cafe Window

If you didn’t get a reservation or don’t have the time to sit inside, I would recommend visiting the Harry Potter Café Window.

This can be found almost opposite the Akasaka Biz Tower, next to the Harry Potter Shop.

It’s a small eatery with a limited menu inspired by Honeydukes. You can buy surprise drinks, Butterbeer ice cream and Hogwarts House doughnuts.

It’s quite popular, and there is normally a queue, but these enchanting snacks look worth the wait.

Explore the Wizarding World Street

Potterheads will love Akasaka as it has its own Wizarding World Street and Harry Potter metro station.

You can find a giant time turner at Harry Potter Gate with a portrait gallery straight from Hogwarts Castle.

At the TBS Akasaka ACT Theater you can book tickets to watch Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Or, why not visit the official Harry Potter Shop? This had lots of magical creatures, gifts and robes to purchase.

Even more Harry Potter in Japan

In Tokyo, you will find lots of Harry Potter attractions. I highly recommend heading to the flagship Harajuku Harry Potter Shop.

You can take a photo with Buckbeak, enter the Forbidden Forest, buy a wand and take a photo with a Chocolate Frog.

The best part is that you can visit their Butterbeer Bar; it’s the only place where you can buy the drink without a theme park or studio ticket.

In Nerima City, you can visit The Making of Harry Potter, a studio tour of your favourite sets, props and behind-the-scenes movie magic.

It’s similar to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London, but it does have some exclusive experiences.

For example, you can take a photo in Hogwarts Library or enter the Ministry of Magic via Floo Powder portal.

Lastly, if you’re heading to Osaka, be sure to visit Universal Studios Japan.

They have an entire Harry Potter area, which is a dream come true for Potterheads.

You can explore Hogsmeade, dine in the Three Broomsticks, sip on Butterbeer and enter Hogwarts Castle.
