York Ghost Merchants - Is This Spooky Ghost Shop Worth Waiting For (2026)?

If you love all things spooky and paranormal, you must visit the delightful York Ghost Merchants.

It’s an independent boutique on a medieval street called The Shambles that allows you to shop for their adorable York Ghosts.

The only catch is that you could wait hours in a queue before you get inside as it’s extremely popular and often goes viral on social media.

The business runs on the traditions imposed by The Sorrowful Guild of Master Ghost Makers and the entire shopping experience has a hauntingly cosy aesthetic.

I waited for over an hour in the rain to shop for ghosts on my recent trip to York. But, was it worth it?

Here is a complete guide for York Ghost Merchants and if shopping for ghosts is worth the wait!

What are people queuing for on The Shambles?

The Shambles is the most popular street in York and is famous for many reasons.

The main one is for Harry Potter as it’s rumoured to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley in the books.

You can normally find lots of Potterheads queuing to shop for Wizarding supplies in The Shop That Must Not Be Named or to sip on a Butterbeer in The Potion’s Cauldron.

But, these days, the long queues on The Shambles are mainly people waiting to shop for ghosts at York Ghost Merchants.

People will wait for hours to get their hands on a famous York Ghost from their spooky boutique.

Who are York Ghost Merchants?

York Ghost Merchants are the Makers & Sellers of the Original and Finest York Ghosts.

They are the most remarkable shop on the most extraordinary street in the most haunted city in the world!

It’s a business that follows the traditions imposed by The Sorrowful Guild of Master Ghost Makers which means they create all their ghosts using traditional methods.

They don’t mass produce their York Ghosts and every one is created by one of their makers in their workshops.

They are also embossed with a stamp that marks the ghost as a true original.

The shop is located on 6 Shambles in a delightful Georgian building from 1780 and the entire shopping experience feels like stepping back in time to Victorian England.

What’s so special about York Ghost Merchants?

Ghosts are synonymous with the city of York which has been voted as one of the most haunted cities in the world.

So, it’s nice to buy some spooky souvenirs on your visit. Each ghost has individual characteristics and a ‘spirit of its own’.

But, it’s more than just a ghost shop. Visiting the York Ghost Merchants is an entire aesthetic experience that people covet.

From waiting in the medieval Shambles and the anticipation of getting inside the mysterious roped-off boutique.

Meeting the friendly sellers, choosing your ghost and the gorgeous Victorian shop with lots of surprises in store.

Every part of this curious experience is singular and extraordinary. So, you’ll often see long lines of people waiting to experience it for themselves.

It’s not just first-time buyers who queue either. York Ghost Merchants has a huge fan base with regular collectors who will wait for hours on end and even overnight for special editions.

I met some regular collectors on my visit who were outside the store at 7 am for a 10 am opening time.

They told me that they visit most months and drive for hours from County Durham.

Love it or hate it, the York Ghosts are here to stay and the business continues to expand exponentially with its popularity and demand.

How long is the queue at York Ghost Merchants?

Typically, the queue for York Ghost Merchants is around 3 hours long, which is wild if you think about it! It’s a line worthy of a theme park.

But, people are obsessed with these spooky spectres and are willing to wait for them come rain or shine.

The shop only allows eight people into their boutique at any time to make it a more relaxing shopping experience for all.

They also don’t rush you to pick your ghosts which is a relief after all that waiting time.

My biggest tip would be to wait around an hour before the shop opens.

That way you’re almost guaranteed to be one of the first people inside for the day. You’ll only wait around an hour or so rather than 3!

I got there around 8.45 am for a 10 am opening time and was the third person inside the shop.

It was heavy rain and chilly on my visit but I persevered with my brolly. Everyone around me in the queue was in good spirits.

It’s good to note that they cut the queue off at some point in the afternoon depending on how busy they are.

This is to ensure everyone in line can get inside before closing time. So, don’t leave it too late to join!

Entering the remarkable shop

So, after waiting in the rain, the time finally arrived for me to enter the famous York Ghost Merchants!

It felt so good to head beyond the ropes and see what lay beyond in this mysterious and high-demand boutique.

As soon as you enter it will feel like stepping back in time.

It’s set in a stunning Georgian building and all the merchants are dressed in Victorian garb and are referred to by nicknames like Mr. Bagg’s.

The shop has an old-world aesthetic with its wooden beams and creaking floors.

The walls are delightfully decorated with gilded portraits and an old grandfather clock.

Beyond the surface, there are some amazing surprises in store for you.

You can peek into cracks and peepholes to see ghostly scenes and can even look behind their framed paintings to reveal Phantom Ghosts.

Shopping for York Ghosts

After I had finished ogling all the aesthetic details of the shop, I picked up my wooden box to shop for ghosts.

The York Ghost Merchants make many different types of ghosts in their shop and no two ghosts are the same.

The patterns all come out differently and collectors have given nicknames for these decorations over time.

They have beach ghosts, terrazzo, dandy, etched, huckster, egg, veiled and many more.

They also have a special collection of Phantom Ghosts hidden behind one of their portraits. I want one of these next time!

The Ghost Merchants make two sizes of ghosts, the Original Ghosts are 8 cm tall and the Little Ghosts are 5 cm tall.

I preferred the little ones nicknamed ‘BOO’ ghosts as they are just so cute.

What are York Ghosts made of?

The Standard Shelf Ghosts are made of natural water-based, non-toxic British materials.

But, they also have ones made from cast iron, silica, glass, metals and other materials that are known as special editions and cost a lot more.

When I was browsing the ghosts, I couldn’t believe how sturdy and heavy they were.

They are made in a mould but aren’t hollow and completely filled in. So, they felt good quality and sturdy.

You know it’s an original ghost by the maker’s mark stamped on the back or there may be a stamp or coin on the bottom if they are a special edition.

Take a photo of your new ghosts

It was so hard to choose a ghost on my visit as there are so many amazing ones. But, a tip I received was to go for the ghost that calls to you.

So, I picked two Little Ghosts. One was a beach ghost with a red and blue dripping pattern and another with a marbled rainbow pattern.

Before you purchase your ghosts at the till, make sure to visit their little miniature set of the Shambles and get a photo of them.

It’s such a lovely touch and makes a great accompanying souvenir!

They used to have a miniature train where your ghosts could go for a ride around the shop but, unfortunately, it’s out of service.

The friendly staff did let my ghosts sit in the carriage though for a photo. How sweet do they look? I was a proud ghost mamma!

How much are York Ghosts?

The standard York Ghosts are £18 for an Original and £9 for a Little.

They have special editions that cost more. For example, Phantom Ghosts are £21 for an original and £12 for a small.

They also have some rare, unusual and Black Box editions which increase in price considerably. And prices start from £17/£34.

After purchase, all of your York Ghosts are wrapped up beautifully and presented to you.

The York Original Ghosts are wrapped in an 1852 map of York or you’ll receive a ‘BOO’ box for each Little Ghost.

I loved the ‘BOO’ boxes as they had a little gold framed hole for my ghosts to peep through!

They also have some pretty tote bags with artwork of the York Ghost Merchants that you can buy as well.

I bought one of their smaller ones to carry my ghosts away to protect them as it was still pouring down.

If you’re thinking that waiting a few hours to shop for ghosts sounds like a nightmare, then don’t fret.

They have now opened another ghost shop just a few minutes walk from York Ghost Merchants called the York Ghost Dispensary in St Anthony’s Garden.

This shop is equally as delightful but has much less of a waiting time. So, you can buy your ghosts a lot faster.

Although I loved the main shop on The Shambles, the Dispensary is where I’d go next time as the queue was so much shorter!

I only waited around 15 minutes to enter which is nothing compared to the waiting times of the main store.

It’s adjacent to a 15th-century church and a medieval Guild Hall. It also has a gorgeous garden to relax in before/after your ghost shopping.

Exploring York Ghost Dispensary

Just like their flagship store on The Shambles, the Dispensary has outdone themselves with the gorgeous aesthetics.

It will feel like another portal through time and you can see even more of their ghosts on display to purchase.

The Dispensary also have a little rural scene set up where you can take a photo of your ghosts before you buy.

This one is set in a graveyard and is so adorable. I bought a purple Little Ghost for my mum and, it looked so sweet in the graveyard on its own!

I felt a lot more relaxed shopping here as you couldn’t see the long queue outside and there was far less pressure to shop for my ghosts.

Are York Ghost Merchants worth waiting for?

I’m not going to lie to you, I didn’t expect waiting for this shop to be worth the time.

Don’t get me wrong, I knew I was going to love the shopping experience as I adore ghosts but I wasn’t convinced by the long wait times.

I thought it was a bit of a fad from viral videos but I was SO wrong. I am now officially York Ghost Merchants convert and I plan to collect more!

All in all, I loved waiting for both York ghost shops as they were just so remarkable.

There were many fun surprises and the entire experience was so cosy and wholesome.

I ended up buying three Little Ghosts, two for me and one for my mum.

I called my ghosts Caspian and Nox and they are staring at me on my desk as I type.

After I left, I can see why people love to visit as I can’t think of another experience in the world quite like it.

If you’re on the fence about waiting this is your sign to go for it. It’s honestly one of the most unique shopping experiences I’ve ever had.

York is one of the most haunted cities in the entire world so shopping for ghosts is guaranteed to be a spooktacular time.

The Guild Room & The Understore

If you were after a genteel ghost shopping experience, why not book an appointment at their Guild Room at 31 St Saviourgate?

You can only visit this shop by appointment or invitation and it’s meant to be a more tranquil experience.

Bookings are free and should be made a few weeks ahead of time but you’re restricted to 45 minutes of ghost shopping. At this time, you can only book on Wednesdays.

They also have a clandestine shop called the Understore which is password-protected and is not something the merchants openly discuss.

You can find this password on their website through a series of clues and good fortune!

Why not visit for York Ghost Week?

A great time to visit York would be for York Ghost Week which takes place at the end of October to early November.

This year, it’s their fifth Ghost Week and they have an entire calendar of spooky events that you can attend.

A popular thing to do is take part in ‘The Little York Ghost Hunt’ where they place ‘stray’ and ‘seed ghosts’ around the city for you to find for free!

Most of these have imperfections from their workshop but they also hide some rare editions like Phantom Ghosts as well.

There are also events where you can chat with fellow ghost collectors, stamp a tavern passport at haunted pubs, and shop for ultra-rare ghosts.

A fair warning though, dear traveller. This will most likely be their busiest week of the entire year! So, expect a little chaos and long wait times.

York Ghost Merchants’ opening times

Between the York Ghost Merchants and York Ghost Dispensary, there is a ghost shop open every day in York.

Both ghost shops typically open from 10 am – 5.30 pm.

The Shambles store is closed on Wednesdays and The Ghost Dispensary is closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

My top tips for York Ghost Merchants

Get there before opening time – I would wait before the shop opens for a quieter visit. Although not guaranteed, it usually means you wait for less time.

Pick the ghost that calls to you – they stock 600 ghosts per day in their shop and it can be hard to choose. I was told to pick the one that speaks to you.

Try the York Ghost Dispensary – If you don’t want to wait for hours for the original shop the York Ghost Dispensary also sells ghosts but you wait for a fraction of the time.

‘Ghost in the Post’ – sometimes they release ghosts that you can shop online and they ship worldwide. So, look out for releases on their social media channels.

It’s rumoured to have over 1000 resident ghosts that haunt its ancient streets and so it stands to reason that there are lots of spooky things you can do.
